What to Pack: Ages and Stages

I used to love packing for trips, picking out what to pack, making cute little outfits for the girls, fitting everything into as few suitcases as possible (a talent I pride myself on).  I would begin sometimes weeks ahead for a big trip.  Gathering everything I would need, making lists and contemplating all the possibilities of traveling with small children.

But lately I don’t enjoy packing so much.  Getting things together for 5 people (hubby is on his own!) is tedious and I tend to leave it until the last minute, now.  And inevitably I forget something important like when I forgot socks for Doodle when we visited snowy and frigid Washington, DC or the time we went to Disney when I was 8 months pregnant with Doodle and I forgot pants (yep, pants…I wore a dress and leggings in the car) or that time I forgot to pack a bra when we went to Vilnius, Vienna and Budapest.

But no matter how little I plan ahead or how much I procrastinate, I always have my guidelines for what I need in my head that I have used since Honeybun was a baby.

How many outfits does one need for a newborn?  What about a toddler?  And how many diapers does a 6 month old need?  What about underwear for a potty training preschooler?
