Preparing the Nest

You know that whole pregnant nesting thing?  Yeah, I don’t get it.  Not like “I don’t GET it,” scratching my head, but like “that doesn’t happen to me.”  Third baby and I’ve yet to get the instinct to “nest”.  Most of what I do to prepare for baby is out of obligation and an inner nagging, never have I experienced an uncontrollable urge to clean (and I mean NEVER, not even when I’m not pregnant.).   I’m more of the “yeah, I could do such-and-such, but I’m tired and I have a ton of stuff to clear off my DVR, so I’ll do that instead” type.  I totally respect those pregnant mommies, especially the working ones or the ones doing it with a toddler, who actually WANT to clean but that’s totally not me.

Part of me feels extremely guilty for not having a nice nursery for this baby.  I spent a  lot of time and energy preparing Honeybun’s nursery and I want this one to be just as nice.  Sugarplum got what we had in our rental house in Dublin, but at least it was clean, bright and a nice place to be.  I hate everything about the room that will be for this baby.  I hate the wall color (which I tried to remedy by painting an accent wall which did not turn out as nice as I’d hoped), I hate the curtains and most of all, I HATE the floor (gray and white builder’s special tile….who thought it was a good idea to put tile in a bedroom?  Ah, Florida…).  All of this leads me to want to change everything about the room but I don’t have the time, help or energy so I’m stuck doing what little bits I can.

So here I am, less than one month from my full-term date and here’s my “still gotta do it” list to prepare for baby:

  • buy the crib mattress
  • finish painting the baby’s room
  • arrange the furniture into a usable space (crib in the middle blocking the closet not so useful)
  • Hang the pictures I’ve set aside for baby’s room
  • Find/make curtains because the hunter green ones the previous owner left are not gonna work
  • Find a rug to hide the hideous tile
  • Wash all the newborn clothes, blankets, hats, sheets etc.
  • Get the diapers and supplies ready for use
  • Set up the play-yard/bassinet (which requires rearranging the furniture in my room)
  • Buy breastfeeding supplies
  • Replenish my supply of baby must-have toiletries/medications

Luckily some of this requires shopping which is not a problem for me (though with Honeybun on Spring Break, shopping does become more or a challenge) and Sugarplum has been providing more than enough need to do extra laundry.  It’s just the decorating/cleaning tasks that have me bothered.  Ho hum, at least the baby won’t know the difference if I don’t get it all done!
