A Balanced Day

Whenever we’re meeting someone for a meal and they ask what the girls like, I always reply “It doesn’t matter, they’ll eat anything,” and it’s true.  Though they do have their dislikes, they will eat most anything, anywhere.  At home I often cook a variety of food types from pretty much any every place you can think of around the world.  If I have a recipe, I’ll try making it and my kids will eat it (though I’m by no means a strict recipe follower!)

Our meals are not always the most balanced, we almost always have a heavy carb-loaded breakfast and don’t always  get a veg in at lunch but dinner is always protein, veg, carb and I try to balance out the day making sure we get everything at some point.  I also push the healthy snacks, morning is always something “fresh” meaning fruit or vegetable and afternoon I again try to push the fresh but usually we end up with cheese or a healthy snacky item like yogurt melts, pirates booty, veggie chips, etc.

Here’s what our meals have looked like the past 11 days and yes, my children had everything listed.  They not have eaten every item but this is what they were given and nothing else.  I am not a short order cook, they eat what I give them or they don’t eat.  They are always welcome to seconds of the protein and veg and can have more of the carb after they’ve cleaned their plate.  Some meals are a struggle but I want my children to grow up knowing how to eat healthfully and also thankful that they have food and not picky about what they put in their mouths.
