Reading Response Cards

When we began homeschooling, I set out a schedule for Honeybun and determined how much work I thought she should be completing each week.  She has a set number of tasks each week plus reading, spelling and exercise daily.

I track her work in a daily planner but have been leaving the reading part up to her.  She loves reading so it’s never been a problem to get her to read.  The problem, though, became tracking what she was reading.

As part of the 2nd grade curriculum (she completed the 1st grade curriculum in the fall), she should be able to discuss the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of what she reads.  So I decided to kill two birds with one stone and create reading response cards for her to complete each day which will help show me that she is comprehending what she is reading as well as help me keep track of what she is reading.

I printed out the questions on large index cards with each question on a different color.  Each day she randomly selects a card and answers the questions about her reading that day.  Sometimes I still have to help guide her thinking with the questions as she becomes more familiar with the concepts but overall she can complete the responses on her own.

The front of each card includes the same information: the date, title, author and how much she read.

The backs are each different with one main question and two supporting questions for each of the areas.
