Vintage Board Games that Kids Still Love

One of my kids’ most favorite parts of visiting my childhood home in Colorado is the toys. All of them. I swear, my parents haven’t gotten rid of a single toy, game, puzzle or art project since my sister and I were born.

This includes the overflowing dad-made giant toy box in the basement (oh, to have a basement…) and the filled-to-the-top game closet that houses all the board games and puzzles that we grew up playing. Because back in the days before technology (we didn’t get our first PC until I was in 3rd grade and, of course, tablets and smart phones were not a thing!), board games and puzzles were where all the entertainment was at.

And while my kids love all the toys from the barbies, my little ponies and wood blocks to our dad-made wooden pull train and tinker toys, they really love the vintage board games.

We have the classics at home like Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders and Monopoly but what we don’t have are the monstrous games of my childhood that provided hours upon hours of fun for me and my sister and continue to do the same today for my kids.

And many of vintage board games of my childhood have been re-released and available in new, but still fun, modern versions.

Here’s a few of the vintage board games my kids still love:

Ker Plunk

From putting in the sticks and filling up the top with marbles to try not to let the marbles drop, Ker Plunk can be fun for one kid or many and possibilities for play are numerous as kids come up with their own rules and ways to use the game.

Mouse Trap

A childhood favorite of mine, Mouse Trap is fun to play as a game or just fun to build the marble track and watch the chain reaction of pieces that captures the mouse at the end.

My Little Pony Rainbow Magic

Not exactly the same as the vintage game original, the new My Little Pony Rainbow Magic game is just as fun with simple rules, great for littler players, and a rainbow at the end of the game.

SolarQuest

A property buying type game for older kids, SolarQuest takes kids on a journey through the solar system as they try to beat their opponents (and learn a little bit about the planets along the way!)

Mastermind

Another one of my childhood favorites, Mastermind is a two-person game requiring problem solving skills as one player tries to break the code created by their opponent.
