{"id":8919,"date":"2015-08-26T08:23:05","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T12:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=8919"},"modified":"2015-08-26T08:23:05","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T12:23:05","slug":"signs-of-labor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/26\/signs-of-labor\/","title":{"rendered":"Signs of Labor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My body&#8217;s been giving me some pretty intense prodromal\u00a0labor for a few nights after less intense for a few weeks (aka: lots of regular contractions that don&#8217;t give me a baby!) \u00a0So I decided to pull out my <a title=\"Best Books on Birth\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/29\/best-books-on-birth\/\">favorite\u00a0birth books<\/a> for a refresher on the typical signs of labor. \u00a0It&#8217;s not that I&#8217;m worried about not knowing when it&#8217;s real (this is my 4th, after all!) or not getting to the hospital (we are fully <a title=\"Preparing for a Homebirth\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/19\/preparing-for-a-homebirth\/\">prepared for our homebirth<\/a>) I was more just curious about what a &#8220;textbook&#8221; labor looks like.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the consensus is:<\/p>\n<h5>Signs of labor may include:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Bloody show\/loss of your mucus plug<\/li>\n<li>Baby engaging low in the pelvis or &#8220;lightening&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Water breaking which can happen any time before or during labor\/delivery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Early labor involves:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>your cervix effacing and dilating to about 4 centimeters<\/li>\n<li>regular contractions which increase in frequency and intensity over time<\/li>\n<li>contractions may not be very strong and can easily be ignored or worked through.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183.jpg\" alt=\"DSC03183\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1944\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183.jpg 2592w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC03183-390x293.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2592px) 100vw, 2592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5>Active labor involves:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>your cervix continuing to efface and dilating to about 7 centimeters<\/li>\n<li>regular contractions that last about a minute and are 3-5 minutes apart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Transition involves:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>your cervix finishing effacing and dilating<\/li>\n<li>regular contractions that are a minute or longer and every 2-3 minutes<\/li>\n<li>the most intense part of labor, many women feel out of control, &#8220;done&#8221; or &#8220;over&#8221; labor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Delivery\/birth\/pushing stage is:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>contractions that are longer than a minute and 2-4 minutes apart<\/li>\n<li>generally 20 minutes to 2 hours long but can last longer<\/li>\n<li>May feel intense pressure or burning around the rectum and\/or vaginal opening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Delivery of Afterbirth\/Placenta may:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>occur\u00a05 to 30 minutes after birth<\/li>\n<li>have a few contractions and\/or need to push<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Luckily I felt relieved that none of this was new information to me. \u00a0But as I read through the &#8220;normal&#8221;
