{"id":8823,"date":"2015-08-05T09:53:59","date_gmt":"2015-08-05T13:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=8823"},"modified":"2015-08-05T09:53:59","modified_gmt":"2015-08-05T13:53:59","slug":"a-selfless-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/05\/a-selfless-act\/","title":{"rendered":"A Selfless Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week marks a new beginning in our family journey. \u00a0A few months ago, I shared <a title=\"Weekend Wisdom: Kidney Disease Awareness Month\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/28\/kidney-disease-awareness-month\/\">a post from Hubby<\/a> regarding his family&#8217;s struggles with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and specifically how it has affected his dad, my children&#8217;s grandpa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573.jpg\" alt=\"mass snow\" width=\"2288\" height=\"1520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573.jpg 2288w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573-1000x664.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC03573-390x259.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2288px) 100vw, 2288px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, I&#8217;m happy to report that yesterday, Grandpa\u00a0received his new kidney. \u00a0Surgery went well and the new kidney is already working and he is now resting and recovering.<\/p>\n<p>I could go on and on about how grateful and relieved we are that Grandpa is finally on the road to feeling better, but that sentiment, I hope, speaks for itself. \u00a0Instead, I would like to take the time to acknowledge someone else who is also recovering: his donor.<\/p>\n<p>Many people with PKD spend years waiting for a donor kidney as they get sicker and sicker. \u00a0We experienced this with both hubby&#8217;s Grammy and his Uncle. \u00a0Grammy, unfortunately, was too weak to undergo a transplant so lived out her last years with multiple dialysis visits a week. \u00a0And his uncle lived with decreasing kidney function until both his kidneys were removed and he, too, was on dialysis until a deceased donor was available (and we are so happy that one was found!)<\/p>\n<p>But my father-in-law didn&#8217;t want to go through all that, he didn&#8217;t want to wait until his health was so bad that he could get on the list. \u00a0Until he had been on the list long enough to be eligible for a kidney. \u00a0Until a matching deceased donor kidney was available.<\/p>\n<p>So he and my mother-in-law took to seeking a live donor. \u00a0They requested people be tested as a match and many, many people did! \u00a0But matches are hard to make and many people were not eligible to donate due to other health issues.<\/p>\n<p>But by some miracle, a match was found, a former co-worker of my mother-in-law. \u00a0And not only was she a match, she was\u00a0<em>willing<\/em> to donate.<\/p>\n<p>I can not stress enough the importance of that last statement: This woman was\u00a0<em>willing<\/em> to give one of her healthy kidneys to another. \u00a0She was\u00a0<em>willing<\/em> to undergo major surgery for the benefit of another. \u00a0This woman literally risked her life so that my children&#8217;s Grandpa could enjoy the rest of his.<\/p>\n<p>Her selflessness is unimaginable. \u00a0Her generosity, unrepayable. \u00a0Her bravery, unfathomable.<\/p>\n<p>And all I can think to say to her is: Thank you. \u00a0Thank you for giving my father-in-law a bright, healthy future. \u00a0Thank you for providing my children with years and years more of fun times with their Grandpa who will now fell well enough to tromp through the woods, go on adventures, and be there as they grow, reaching new milestones and sharing their big life moments.
