a Child&#8217;s Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a lot of ideas and concepts in the world that can be hard for kids to comprehend. \u00a0We have never been ones to keep much from our kids, we talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/22\/love-and-loss\/\">life and death<\/a> often and are very open with them about current events and answer any questions they have about life and the world\u00a0truthfully with as much detail as we feel\u00a0they are mature enough to understand.<\/p>\n<p>But every once in a while they will catch me off guard and say something or ask me a question that demonstrates the innocence of how their little minds are processing the world.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full daughter was three and a half, we visited Glendalough, an old monastery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/25\/outside-dublin-ireland\/\">outside Dublin<\/a> where we were living at the time. \u00a0We explained to her that Monks used to live there. \u00a0After a while we realized this is the vision she had of what it used to be like:<\/p>\n<p>Most all of the preschools in Ireland consider themselves to be Montessori programs and we have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/18\/our-furry-family\/\">cat named Monk<\/a>. \u00a0So she was imagining a bunch of cats in preschool!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/gledalough.jpg\" alt=\"Glendalough Monestary, Ireland\" width=\"3321\" height=\"2210\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/05\/the-missed-good-bye\/\">Gran&#8217;ma died<\/a>, she was cremated. \u00a0My girls (then just turned 4 and 6) had been to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/20\/good-bye-to-our-great-grandparents\/\">funerals for hubby&#8217;s two grandparents<\/a> that year as well so were familiar with caskets and burials but when we tried to explain that Great-Gran&#8217;ma wouldn&#8217;t be in a big box but rather a vase, they became confused. \u00a0We talked about the process of cremation and at one point my older daughter asked:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;but how do they get her in the oven? \u00a0She&#8217;s way too big!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She was imagining our poor Gran&#8217;ma being folded up and shoved into a sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1684px) 100vw, 1684px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hubby&#8217;s daddy underwent a much needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/28\/kidney-disease-awareness-month\/\">kidney transplant<\/a> last summer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/05\/a-selfless-act\/\">thanks to a generous family friend<\/a> who gave him one of hers. \u00a0About a week before the surgery, after many months of talk leading up to it, discussing nearly every part of the procedure including how they would need to stitch him up when they were done, she asked:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mommy, will they just put Grandpa in the sewing machine when they&#8217;re done to sew him back together?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apparently we hadn&#8217;t been very clear about how exactly they would stitch him back up!<img all giggle, except Sugarplum. \u00a0She thought we were all making fun of her but I gently explained we weren&#8217;t laughing because she did (or didn&#8217;t) say it, but because it was such a funny thing to think about.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually she joined us in the giggling and and the girls devised an elaborate idea of what a &#8220;boobie theatre&#8221; would be like with boobies all over the walls where babies could crawl around and get milk whenever they wanted. \u00a0Honeybun asked hubby why he wasn&#8217;t laughing and he said &#8220;I don&#8217;t know, do you think I would like a place like that?&#8221; and she exclaimed &#8220;NOOOOOO!!!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I smiled at hubby and said &#8220;I guess we&#8217;re doing okay in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/14\/learning-about-lactation\/\">teaching them about breasts<\/a>!&#8221;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full Pipsqueak was born, we all sat at the dinner table together and Doodle noted that Pipsqueak wasn&#8217;t eating. \u00a0I said &#8220;No, he&#8217;s sleeping right now.&#8221; \u00a0Doodle pointed to his dinner and said &#8220;Mine.&#8221; \u00a0I asked him if Pipsqueak could have some of his pasta and Doodle shook his head and said &#8220;milk.&#8221; \u00a0I replied &#8220;you&#8217;re, right, baby can only have milk. \u00a0Did you used to have milk?&#8221; \u00a0Doodle abruptly replied &#8220;No!&#8221; Then pulled up his bib and started feeling around for his nipples. \u00a0&#8220;Ok, you&#8217;re right&#8230;you never had milk! \u00a0But did you drink mommy milk like the baby?&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;YEAH!&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10573\"
