Honeybun and I haven’t always gotten along. \u00a0She is oftentimes\u00a0hyper-emotional and I am oftentimes too impatient to deal with it (one of my biggest mommy shortcomings and sources of major mommy guilt).<\/p>\n

\"h<\/a><\/p>\n

A few weeks ago\u00a0when the kids were running through the sprinklers together, she whacked Doodle right on the head because he kept putting his hands over the sprinkler head. \u00a0I gave her a 5 minute “break” to get control of herself and she screamed at me: “You’re the meanest mommy ever, when are you going to stop being so mean to me?!?!” \u00a0I calmly replied “When I stop loving you so much.” \u00a0She snapped back “Well that’s\u00a0never<\/em> going to happen.” \u00a0I smiled from my full heart and told her “You’re right!”<\/p>\n

Then a few nights later I head her wailing in her bed a while after bedtime. \u00a0When I went up to see what we going on, she said she had forgotten that I gave her a kiss already (one of those hyper-emotional, often ridiculous moments she has). \u00a0I could have told her she was being silly, given her another kiss and walked away. \u00a0But instead I took the time to sit with her and talk about it.<\/p>\n

She apologized for forgetting and\u00a0getting upset. \u00a0I explained to her that even if I\u00a0had<\/em> forgotten to give her a kiss that getting so upset about it would still be a silly thing. \u00a0Because, <\/em>kisses or not, I always love her. \u00a0Even if I don’t always say it, I always feel it, it’s always<\/em> there. \u00a0\u00a0I told her even when I’m yelling at her, I still love her.<\/p>\n

She began to nod and then stopped “I don’t think that makes sense.” \u00a0But it’s true. \u00a0I get frustrated with my children and, yes, even yell sometimes because I\u00a0love<\/em> them with everything I have.<\/p>\n

I asked her what the only thing I want for her\u00a0for is. \u00a0She replied “for me to be safe.” \u00a0I said “you’re right, that is my mommy job. \u00a0But what is the other thing that I want for you. \u00a0What do I want you to be?”<\/p>\n

She remembered how I told her during the sprinkler incident that I want her to be a good person. \u00a0And I exclaimed “yes! \u00a0I want \u00a0you to be a\u00a0good\u00a0<\/em>person! \u00a0I want you to always make smart, safe choices. \u00a0I yell sometimes because I want you to be\u00a0your best<\/em>. \u00a0I know that you are an awesome kid. \u00a0You are so kind and worry about how other people feel. \u00a0But sometimes you make bad choices and it doesn’t make you a bad person, but I want you to\u00a0always<\/em> try to be your best. \u00a0So sometimes I have to help you with that. \u00a0I have to remind you that you’re better than the choices you’re making.”<\/p>\n

I could tell she was processing it, taking it all in, word by word. \u00a0And she said to me “because you love me?”<\/p>\n

I went on about how if I didn’t love her sooooo much I wouldn’t care if she made bad choices. \u00a0I wouldn’t care if she grew up to be a nasty, terrible person. \u00a0That I would just let her do whatever she wanted because if I didn’t love her I wouldn’t care what happened to her.<\/p>\n

\"h<\/a><\/p>\n

I gave her another kiss (or 12) and told her\u00a0again<\/em> how much I loved her. \u00a0And I meant it. \u00a0We may not always see eye to eye. \u00a0She may drive me batty and truthfully, I may never\u00a0get<\/em> her and the way she is. \u00a0But I will\u00a0always<\/em> love her. \u00a0Always. \u00a0And I will always do everything I can for her.<\/p>\n

She is seven today and it’s hard for me to believe. \u00a0It’s hard for me to even fathom how we got here, how the past SEVEN years have been with her and about her. \u00a0Every day that goes by she gets bigger and stronger and more independent. \u00a0Every day that goes by she is more and more grown up and less and less my baby. \u00a0But she will still always be my baby, my first baby, my first love at first sight, my first everything. \u00a0And I could not be more happy that she will always be\u00a0mine<\/em>.<\/p>\n
