{"id":8519,"date":"2015-06-17T08:33:10","date_gmt":"2015-06-17T12:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=8519"},"modified":"2019-06-11T11:12:39","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T15:12:39","slug":"a-curriculum-unit-on-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/17\/a-curriculum-unit-on-france\/","title":{"rendered":"A Curriculum Unit on France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week we dove head first into our <a title=\"A European Learning Adventure\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/03\/a-european-learning-adventure\/\">European Learning Adventure<\/a>, starting with France (per Honeybun&#8217;s request..she thinks she&#8217;s French because she attended a French preschool in Dublin and learned two whole French words!). \u00a0I have to admit it was a lot more fun than I expected and I was really happy to reintroduce Honeybun to the world she once saw in person since she doesn&#8217;t remember anything about our trip to <a title=\"Paris, France\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/22\/paris-france\/\">Paris<\/a>. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t go into it with a lot of preparation or expectations but we did a lot of fun things and I\u00a0<em>think<\/em> my girls even learned something about France and French Culture!<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: This post contains affiliate links and images meaning if you click any product link and make a purchase, Beyond Mommying may receive a small commission which is used for the upkeep of the website; sheet I made for her adding up all the stairs in the most popular Paris attractions and the telling time worksheets from this free <a href=\"http:\/\/mrssturdysclass.blogspot.com\/2012\/12\/madeline.html\">Madeline unit<\/a>\u00a0(you can find the PDF link in the comments). \u00a0And she filled in the blanks on a map of France I made her showing the most populous cities and biggest rivers. \u00a0(You can download and print my entire\u00a0France Curriculum Unit\u00a0below).<\/p>\n<p>But the most fun part of the week was all the projects we did together!<\/p>\n<p>We started by creating the French flag for lunch. \u00a0I asked them what color the flag was to which Honeybun was quick to respond red, white and blue. \u00a0So before we headed to the store to pick up a few things, we came up with what healthy things we could buy to create the French flag for lunch. \u00a0The girls decided we should get blueberries, white bread and red peppers. \u00a0They were delighted to find French bread in the bakery and switched to purple globe grapes instead of blueberries. \u00a0I added some disassembled pepperoni and mozzarella roll-ups we had leftover for a little protein and let the girls get to creating. \u00a0We referenced a picture of the flag from one of our books to ensure the proper. order and the girls loved being able to play with their food (before gobbling it up and begging for more!)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150610_111241 (1)\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-1000x1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG_20150610_111241-1-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Honeybun also found a project in the Art and Food book for making a stained glass window craft. \u00a0The girls cut shapes out of folded black paper, snowflake style, (which was not as easy as it sounds for the two girls who both ended up with broken, pieced windows the first try!) \u00a0I then applied the black frames to clear contact paper and the girls filled the &#8220;windows&#8221; with bright-colored tissue paper which I had cut into approximately 1&#8243; squares. ballerina paintings help a lot too!) \u00a0Honeybun read up on the Impressionists and then we worked together to figure out what made their art different from the artists before them. \u00a0Once we pinpointed that they usually painted nature and outdoors; and resulted in one of our most fond family moments of her recounting how her teacher burnt her finger on the &#8220;crap&#8221; one day) with Nutella so I thought it would be fun to revisit that part of her history. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t sure how the crepes would turn out as I&#8217;ve tried making them once before (in high school maybe?) and they came out terrible BUT, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they came out this time!<\/p>\n<p>I gave each child their own bowl to mix their own crepe batter. \u00a0Each child started with 1 egg and 1\/2 cup of flour which they mixed together with a fork. \u00a0I then slowly added\u00a01\/4 cup of milk (coconut milk for Doodle) and 1\/4 cup of water plus a pinch of salt while they\u00a0beat the batter until smooth. \u00a0I then cooked the crepes in a small frying pan, using a dollop of butter for the girls&#8217;
