If you didn’t know, it’s National Haiku Poetry Day. \u00a0I’m sure we all remember poetry writing in class and painstakingly trying write the perfect Haiku with 5, 7 and 5 syllables. \u00a0But\u00a0as agitating as it can be to get it just right, it’s also a great place to start when talking about poetry because they are short and rhyming is totally optional.<\/p>\n

I had big plans for a Haiku project with the girls today but, alas, the day slipped away from us and we only got part of the project started and luckily, it was the Haiku writing part!<\/p>\n

I found this great\u00a0freebie on Teachers Pay Teachers<\/a>\u00a0which covers the basic background of how to write a Haiku, as well as examples and a template for writing a Haiku.<\/p>\n

The girls and I sat outside and thought about nature and completed the worksheets. \u00a0I helped Sugarplum with the writing part but the ideas were all hers (she also required a little help with counting her syllables and picking words that worked) but Honeybun was able to complete the work completely on her own, even coming up with her lines all by herself!<\/p>\n

Hopefully over the next few days we’ll get to the beautification and “final draft” part that I hoped to accomplish but for now, here are their rough drafts!<\/p>\n
