{"id":7248,"date":"2015-02-18T09:11:13","date_gmt":"2015-02-18T14:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=7248"},"modified":"2019-06-11T11:25:30","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T15:25:30","slug":"challenge-challenged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/18\/challenge-challenged\/","title":{"rendered":"The Challenge of Being Challenged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>School has been a struggle since we started back after the holidays. \u00a0Between my morning sickness and being busy with a million other things, I haven&#8217;t been good on keeping up with the girls&#8217; school work (luckily they&#8217;re both already ahead!)<\/p>\n<p>But they also haven&#8217;t been good about stay on task. \u00a0I ask them to do their work, sometimes letting them choose what to work on, other times asking them to complete a specific task, and unless I am right there to stay on top of them, they are generally incapable of getting their work done.<\/p>\n<p>Sugarplum still needs a lot of help completing her work since she isn&#8217;t a fluent reader yet, but Honeybun is often more than capable of doing her work independently but just won&#8217;t stay focused.<\/p>\n<p>Honeybun started 2nd grade work in January after completing and showing a strong understanding of the 1st grade work in the fall. \u00a0And all of a sudden, something happened: she&#8217;s challenged! \u00a0But it&#8217;s a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>She doesn&#8217;t know what to do when she doesn&#8217;t understand\u00a0something right away. \u00a0 She shuts down, gets overwhelmed, often cries, loses control of herself, makes excuses for why she can&#8217;t do her work (my eyes are itchy, I&#8217;m too tired, it&#8217;s too cold&#8230;) and no matter how patient and gentle I am with her, it ends with both of us upset and frustrated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-612x1024.jpg\" alt=\"wpid-IMAG1776.jpg\" width=\"299\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-612x1024.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-300x502.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-600x1003.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-150x250.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-1000x1672.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776-390x652.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/wpid-IMAG1776.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>I don&#8217;t expect her to breeze through the 2nd grade work as she did the 1st grade because a lot of 1st grade was review for her and she was never challenged in kindergarten or pre-k. \u00a0Learning has always been easy for her and truthfully, she doesn&#8217;t know\u00a0<em>how\u00a0<\/em>to learn when it isn&#8217;t easy. \u00a0She hasn&#8217;t yet learned how to persist, to open her mind and try to figure things out (I strongly believe this has to do with her natural lack of creativity and problem solving skills which she&#8217;s struggled with since she was tiny).<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the bane of our existence is borrowing\/regrouping in subtraction. \u00a0She is still working on her fluency with subtraction facts and has really struggled with the concept of borrowing a 10 if she doesn&#8217;t have enough to subtract (NOTE: my generation was taught to borrow a &#8216;1&#8217; but it is now taught as borrowing a 10, which actually makes much more logical sense because that is what you are actually doing, you&#8217;re adding 10 to your ones, not 1!)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s funny to me that she is struggling so much with borrowing because she immediately picked up on carrying in addition and declared it &#8220;the most fun math I&#8217;ve ever done!&#8221; \u00a0I&#8217;m having trouble helping her translate the concepts (borrowing is the reverse of carrying) but after a week of struggle, she is\u00a0<em>finally<\/em> starting to get it, thankfully!<\/p>\n<p>Looking to help your little learner practice carrying in addition?<\/p>\n<h3>Download and print my carrying addition\u00a0practice sheets that Honeybun loved!<\/h3>\n<p><em>This\u00a0is a\u00a0<strong>pay what you want<\/strong>\u00a0product meaning you can get it for free or you can choose to support Beyond Mommying by paying any amount you feel is appropriate.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I hate ads as much as you do and will never put ads on Beyond Mommying.
