{"id":7086,"date":"2015-01-21T08:58:27","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T13:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=7086"},"modified":"2021-03-08T10:28:12","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T15:28:12","slug":"adding-three-numbers-printable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/21\/adding-three-numbers-printable\/","title":{"rendered":"Adding Three Numbers Printable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Any parent or teacher who has done math with a first or second grader has probably had the experience of embarking on the task of adding three\u00a0numbers together and what a life changing moment it can be.<\/p>\n<p>This fall Honeybun got really fast with her addition facts, she could spout off the answer to single digit addition problems (2+2, 7+9, etc.) as fast as I can. \u00a0But then we got to something she&#8217;d never seen before: adding <em>three<\/em>\u00a0numbers (2+2+1). \u00a0The first time she saw it, you would have thought she had seen a ghost! \u00a0&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to do that!&#8221; \u00a0I quickly explained to her how she needed to add the first two numbers and then add the third to that total (2+2=4+1=5). \u00a0She kind of got it but I wanted to make sure she understood the bigger concept so I took to making her a worksheet to help her explore the concept on her own.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7089\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-1000x664.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSC04150-390x259.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A big part of the Common Core curriculum (which we use as a guide for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/11\/continuing-common-core\/\">homeschool work<\/a>) is to encourage students to explore a concept before giving them the answer or strategies for solving problems. \u00a0This involves a lot of modeling using counters, cube trains, ten frames, and ones\/tens\/hundred blocks (terms most young elementary parents are probably familiar with!) \u00a0Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t have a lot of these items available to me at home so we just use whatever objects we have around: blocks, cars, figurines, doll shoes, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The worksheet I created for her had her use objects to model ways to add using three whole numbers. \u00a0The first time she did the sheet, she used &#8216;0&#8217; in every problem and while this does create valid solutions, it wasn&#8217;t the idea behind the work so I had her redo it (after a lot of angry six year old words, we did the work together) and she\u00a0began to better understand the idea behind adding three numbers.<\/p>\n<p>I revised the worksheet after she completed it to make it more user-friendly (and prettier) and here it is, yours for the taking to share with your own little learners! \u00a0(Best suited for 1st-2nd graders)<\/p>\n<p><em>This\u00a0is a\u00a0<strong>pay what you want<\/strong>\u00a0product meaning you can get it for free or you can choose to support Beyond Mommying by paying any amount you feel is appropriate.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I hate ads as much as you do and will never put ads on Beyond Mommying.
