{"id":707,"date":"2013-04-23T07:25:34","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T11:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=707"},"modified":"2013-12-19T20:48:44","modified_gmt":"2013-12-20T01:48:44","slug":"lightning-and-thunder-oh-my","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/23\/lightning-and-thunder-oh-my\/","title":{"rendered":"Lightning and Thunder, Oh My!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve officially entered the rainy season in South Florida which means sudden, torrential downpours with thunder and lightning.\u00a0 While this has been great for the water level in our pool (which we struggled to keep up all winter), it\u2019s proving a terrifying experience for Sugarplum\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-708 alignleft\" alt=\"DSC08541 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-188x250.jpg 188w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2-390x520.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC08541-2.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>At the same age (2 \u00bd-3) Honeybun\u00a0also became terrified of the thunder and it wasn\u2019t until her 4<sup>th<\/sup> birthday when we saw the fireworks and I convinced her the thunder was just like fireworks that she got over her fear.\u00a0 She now understands that thunder can\u2019t hurt us and we are safe from the lightning as long as we are inside somewhere.\u00a0 She has been great at keeping Sugarplum\u00a0calm also, relaying the same information I\u2019ve told her and comforting Sugarplum.<\/p>\n<p>Well, yesterday\u2019s nap time was a new frontier for Sugarplum.\u00a0 The rain started about an hour into her nap and heavy rain is very loud in the girls\u2019 room so Sugarplum\u00a0was woken up.\u00a0 She was crying so I knew she was still tired and laid her back down to finish resting.\u00a0 Cue the downpour ten minutes later and hysterical, terrified screaming from her room.\u00a0 I waddled to her as fast as I could (hoping desperately she would not wake up Honeybun\u00a0who naps in a different room).\u00a0 She immediately went back to her bed but was still very upset. I comforted her and turned on her \u201cfishies\u201d (a water sound machine) to try to drown out the rain.<\/p>\n<p>Of course Honeybun\u00a0was awoken but I laid her back down too (mommy needs her nap time right now!) which caused uncontrollable sobbing but she recovered.\u00a0 I thought all was good in the world until another 20 minutes and the thunder started.\u00a0 Again, terrified screaming from Sugarplum.\u00a0 Nap time was lost. \u00a0Sugarplum\u00a0came out to snuggle with me and Honeybun\u00a0joined a minute later.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m hoping the scared of thunder phase won\u2019t last as long for Sugarplum\u00a0as it did for Honeybun.\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard to explain such intangible things to a small child and it\u2019s heartbreaking to see your child so scared and not be able to assuage their fears.\u00a0 I\u2019m hoping big sister Honeybun\u00a0will also be helpful, too, and convince Sugarplum it\u2019s not so bad.\u00a0 At least they share a room at night so hopefully Honeybun\u00a0can at least comfort Sugarplum during our midnight thunderstorms (not that I won\u2019t be up anways!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve officially entered the rainy season in South Florida which means sudden, torrential downpours with thunder and lightning.\u00a0 While this has been great for the water level in our pool (which we struggled to keep up all winter), it\u2019s proving a terrifying experience for Sugarplum\u00a0.
