{"id":624,"date":"2013-04-09T07:21:07","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T11:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=624"},"modified":"2013-12-19T20:37:45","modified_gmt":"2013-12-20T01:37:45","slug":"old-wives-tales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/09\/old-wives-tales\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Wive&#8217;s Tales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The questions regarding my pregnancy have continued and as I get bigger more and more people get curious.\u00a0 About half the time I get asked now when I\u2019m due or \u201chow much longer?\u201d but I still also get asked a lot \u201cis it a boy or a girl?\u201d\u00a0 (see \u201cThe Mystery Baby\u201d).\u00a0 Now though I\u2019m amazed at how many people think they should predict the gender when I tell them we don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Most base their guesses on the shape of my belly so I thought it would be fun to look at the old wives tales people use to predict babies genders and see what it says and compare to how I carried my two girls.<\/p>\n<p><b>Front vs. Side\/Behind<\/b>:\u00a0 This one I\u2019ve seen two ways.\u00a0 Boys are always carried out front, girls are carried either wide or cause you to gain weight in the tush\/hips.\u00a0 I have carried all three of my babes straight out front (you can\u2019t even tell I\u2019m pregnant from behind) which has caused nearly everyone to predict a boy every single pregnancy.\u00a0 Result: inconclusive (shape says boy but I carried two girls the same way).<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>High vs. Low<\/b>: A high baby indicates a girl, low a boy.\u00a0 I\u2019ve carried all three high until they engaged.\u00a0 I now get told a lot it must be a boy because I\u2019m carrying low but does that mean it was a girl 2 weeks ago before it dropped?\u00a0 Result: girl (based on how I carried last two).<\/p>\n<p><b>Cravings<\/b>:\u00a0 Girls make mommy want sweets, boys cause salty and sour cravings.\u00a0 I definitely wanted sweets with both my girls.\u00a0 This time I haven\u2019t had many cravings at all, just aversions (to everything sometimes).\u00a0 Result: boy? (based on being different than other two).<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>The heartbeat theory<\/b>: Though not medically proven, the theory is if baby\u2019s heart rate is on the slower side it\u2019s a boy and faster predicts a girl.\u00a0 I have no idea what babies heartbeat is nor do I know what my girls\u2019 were so no luck predicting on this one.\u00a0 Result: unknown.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Pretty theory<\/b>:\u00a0 This one is strange but the theory goes that a girl will suck the beauty\u00a0 out of her mother\u2019s face so moms carrying boys will be prettier.\u00a0 I strongly feel my appearance has not been affected by this pregnancy any more than it was with the first two.\u00a0 Result: inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p><b>Breakouts<\/b>: Along with the pretty theory, this one says baby girls will make mom\u2019s face break out and boys don\u2019t.\u00a0 My skin has a monthly cycle, no matter what my body is doing.\u00a0 Every month my face breaks out and clears up.\u00a0 This has occurred throughout all my pregnancies, while breastfeeding and not menstruating and along with a normal monthly cycle.\u00a0 Result: inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Morning Sickness<\/b>:\u00a0 Basically, baby girls make you sicker than boys.\u00a0 Honeybun: nauseous all the time; Sugarplum: throwing up regularly; #3 no vomiting and almost no nausea (but tons of lightheadedness).\u00a0 Result: boy<\/p>\n<p><b>The &#8220;linea nigra&#8221;<\/b>:\u00a0 I\u2019d never heard of this one before my research for this post.\u00a0 Apparently if the linea nigra (vertical line of hair many women get on their abdomens) goes to the belly button baby is a girl, all the way to the ribs predicts a boy.\u00a0 While my line is not noticeable from afar, I can pick out the glistening blonde hairs all the way to my ribs.\u00a0 Indicates a boy?\u00a0 Can\u2019t say since I didn\u2019t pay attention with my girls.\u00a0 Result: boy?<\/p>\n<p>There are also two different \u201cancient\u201d methods based on the calendar.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Chinese Calendar<\/b>:\u00a0 Based on month of conception and mother\u2019s age at conception.\u00a0 Honeybun: Boy; Sugarplum: Girl; #3: boy.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Mayan Calendar<\/b>: Based on mother\u2019s age at conception and year of conception.\u00a0 If both are odd or even then you\u2019re getting a girl; one even, one odd, you\u2019re getting a boy.\u00a0 Honeybun: Girl; Sugarplum: Boy; #3: Girl.<\/p>\n<p>There are also tests which use a necklace, key or draino.\u00a0 But I\u2019m not that interested in peeing in drano or bothering to have someone hold a necklace over my belly just to get a wild guess.\u00a0 Bottom line: there is no clear answer (there wasn\u2019t on the last two either) and I can easily wait a few more weeks (to find out the gender anyways. \u00a0Each day gets harder on my body to wait, though!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The questions regarding my pregnancy have continued and as I get bigger more and more people get curious.\u00a0 About half the time I get asked now when I\u2019m due or \u201chow much longer?\u201d but I still also get asked a lot \u201cis it a boy or a girl?\u201d\u00a0 (see \u201cThe Mystery Baby\u201d).\u00a0 Now though I\u2019m [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-624","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-baby-business"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/624","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=624"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/624\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2405,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/624\/revisions\/2405"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=624"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=624"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=624"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
