{"id":6140,"date":"2014-10-08T07:17:56","date_gmt":"2014-10-08T11:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=6140"},"modified":"2014-10-08T07:18:46","modified_gmt":"2014-10-08T11:18:46","slug":"dietary-dilema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/08\/dietary-dilema\/","title":{"rendered":"A Dietary Dilema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hubby and I made a mistake this weekend: we took the kids out for dinner.\u00a0 We were at the mall for a birthday party, did a little browsing and then decided to stay for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve taken our kids out to restaurants and bazillion times.\u00a0 We\u2019ve gone out to eat at least once a week every week since Doodle was born so it\u2019s not like we aren\u2019t used to being out with the kids.<\/p>\n<p>The mistake we made was not planning ahead to eat out.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to go to an Italian restaurant (the only real restaurant at the mall).\u00a0 I was mad at first that I didn\u2019t think to bring the coupon we had at home but was able to pull one up on my phone so all was good.<\/p>\n<p>Until we sat down.\u00a0 Because we hadn\u2019t planned to eat dinner out, I hadn\u2019t brought real food for Doodle, just snacks.\u00a0 He had missed his afternoon nap because of the birthday party and despite a great morning nap and a ton of snacks during the party, he was a disaster when we sat down and just screamed while I tried to glance over the menu. And that\u2019s when it hit me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6143\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-179x300.jpg\" alt=\"wpid-IMAG1460.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-300x502.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-600x1003.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-150x250.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-612x1024.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460-1000x1672.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1460.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>Who takes a kid who can\u2019t have cheese to an Italian restaurant?\u00a0 Like a flood overcoming me, I welled up with frustration and anger and sorrow for my poor little guy as he screamed with hunger.<\/p>\n<p>I finally calmed him down by nursing him (even though he had just fed at the last store we went to) while I tried to make sense of the menu and pick something for him without a list of ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve become a champion ingredient reader when giving Doodle food.\u00a0 He is sensitive to both dairy and corn (and possibly wheat, though the jury is still out on that one).\u00a0 Dairy is fairly easy to spot: milk, cheese, butter, yogurt.\u00a0 But corn hides, it\u2019s in everything.\u00a0 Corn meal, corn starch, corn syrup.\u00a0 It\u2019s everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>I have two beautiful, healthy girls.\u00a0 Girls who can (and pretty much do) eat anything.\u00a0 And I never realized until earlier this year how lucky I am.<\/p>\n<p>I never expected to be \u201cthat\u201d mommy.\u00a0 The one who has to watch everything my kid eats.\u00a0 Who has to be careful of who I let watch my kid and give a stern disclaimer \u201che can\u2019t have ANY dairy or anything with corn.\u00a0 THIS is what he can have.\u00a0 PLEASE don\u2019t give him anything else!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m lucky because his reactions are limited to diarrhea and severe eczema and (as far as we know) are not life threatening.\u00a0 He\u2019s not allergic (that we know of) and has never gotten hives or had an anaphylactic reaction.\u00a0 But he COULD.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if someday he WILL and that scares the crap out of me.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m careful.\u00a0 I read every label.\u00a0 If it has corn or dairy, I don\u2019t give it to him and I watch that he doesn\u2019t get too much wheat since he\u2019s reacted after having it a few times.<\/p>\n<p>But those three things are in pretty much every food that is sold with a label.\u00a0 So my kid lives on plain \u00a0fruit and veggies (except when he demands cinnamon) and meat and eggs.\u00a0 And it\u2019s fine, except when we go out.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t always have stuff \u201cready to serve\u201d for him and I\u2019ve learned (the hard way) that I can\u2019t rely on restaurants having food for him.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s big enough to have pretty much anything and by this age both my girls were eating pretty much anything and everything (with the exception of nuts and shellfish).<\/p>\n<p>But my little guy can not have macaroni and cheese or grilled cheese or pizza or tomato soup or chicken nuggets or a cheeseburger or a ham and cheese sandwich or a taco. My kid may never get to eat a real taco!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1152.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wpid-IMAG1152-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"wpid-IMAG1152.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>I\u2019ve learned to feed him.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned to make things from scratch and work the recipes to get him as much as possible and adding all the \u201cbad\u201d stuff last.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned to serve him deconstructed meals in order to keep him away from the \u201cdanger\u201d foods.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s exhausting.\u00a0 Some days I just wander from the fridge to the freezer to the pantry and back again, making circles trying to find ANYTHING he can have that doesn\u2019t take a lot of prep and that isn\u2019t snacks (puffs, melts, chips, crackers, etc.), usually while he screams.<\/p>\n<p>Some days I just want to give in and throw him a piece of cheese or one of a million other items I have that are laced with corn products.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t want to deal with the after effects, I certainly don\u2019t want to cause him any discomfort but mostly I don\u2019t want to risk a worse reaction.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m officially one of \u201cthose\u201d mommies, a mommy of a child with REAL food restrictions and to be brutally honest, it sucks!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hubby and I made a mistake this weekend: we took the kids out for dinner.\u00a0 We were at the mall for a birthday party, did a little browsing and then decided to stay for dinner.
