{"id":6063,"date":"2014-09-29T08:17:48","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T12:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=6063"},"modified":"2014-09-29T08:26:03","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T12:26:03","slug":"lost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/29\/lost\/","title":{"rendered":"And then I lost it!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something happened on Friday: I lost it.<\/p>\n<p>I lost it like I haven\u2019t in a long time.\u00a0 After a long week.\u00a0 After days of arguing with Honeybun and listening to her say things like \u201cI just don\u2019t like to think\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m not going to do it!\u201d and \u201cI hate homeschool.\u201d After spending over an hour trying to get her to complete 8 simple addition problems.\u00a0 After being yelled at by my six year old with pseudo curse words (you know, the kind parents use when they don\u2019t want to curse in front of their kids but are nearly as bad as real curse words because they are used in the same context\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>I had had enough, I was exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>I gave the girls instructions to start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/26\/taming-the-playroom\/\">cleaning their play room<\/a> (a task they had known was coming all day) and I sat down on the couch to nurse a distraught and hungry Doodle who had just fallen after coming in from the pool.\u00a0 I told the girls that I would help them when Doodle was done.\u00a0 And that is when it happened.\u00a0 A crash, a gasp and the words: \u201cMommy!\u00a0 Sugarplum just broke your nail polish!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Usually I would send the girls back to whatever they were supposed to be doing and finish feeding Doodle then take care of it but we\u2019re talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/21\/shattered-things\/\">broken glass<\/a>.\u00a0 And spilt nail polish\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6066\" alt=\"wpid-IMAG1433-612x1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241.jpg\" width=\"367\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241-300x502.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241-600x1004.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241-149x250.jpg 149w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/wpid-IMAG1433-612x10241-390x653.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a>I took Doodle off the boob and rushed into the kitchen to find Sugarplum precariously perched on the edge of the kitchen bench where she had been trying to reach my nail polish on top of the cabinet.\u00a0 And there was the hard truth: nail polish and broken glass splashed across the kitchen floor.<\/p>\n<p>And that is when I lost it.<\/p>\n<p>I sent the girls out of the kitchen and strapped Doodle into his highchair and as I began to clean up the mess, I gave the girls everything I had.\u00a0 But (luckily) I didn\u2019t have much in me.\u00a0 I wanted to scream, let them have it, make them feel the true consequences of their actions and choices but my voice came out barely louder than usual and was all crackly.<\/p>\n<p>In any other situation I probably would have sat down right there in the middle of the kitchen floor and cried, but there was broken glass.\u00a0 And nail polish.\u00a0 So instead of collapsing in frustration, I wept while I swept.\u00a0 And I bawled while I vacuumed.\u00a0 And I sobbed while I mopped. \u00a0(I&#8217;m starting to sound like a knock-off Dr. Seuss book!)<\/p>\n<p>And I thought about it.\u00a0 In that moment I had lost it and while I felt guilt over my reaction, what really bothered me was the question: <i>when<\/i> had I lost THEM?<\/p>\n<p>When did my parenting go so far off course that they can\u2019t follow simple directions? \u00a0That our basic house rules (rules like if it\u2019s not your, don\u2019t touch it; make smart, safe choices; and be kind to each other) are too much to handle?<\/p>\n<p>I tried to remind myself that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/23\/learning-the-limits\/\">testing boundaries<\/a> is normal and that it indicates a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/02\/the-what-why-and-how-of-attachment\/\">secure attachment<\/a>.\u00a0 But we\u2019re not talking about a baby or toddler here, this is not about Doodle reaching into the cookie jar after I told him \u201cno\u201d.\u00a0 This is a four year old and a six year old who feel so confident in my love for them that they can do anything they want.<\/p>\n<p>They know that I love them always and no matter what but what we\u2019re missing is the respect part.\u00a0 Somehow I\u2019ve been completely incapable of teaching them to have respect for me.\u00a0 To treat me kindly, lovingly and to do what I ask of them.\u00a0 They do these things for most other people but can\u2019t manage to understand it should be done for me as well.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t discipline them or follow through with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/13\/ifthen\/\">consequences <\/a>or threats, it\u2019s that they don\u2019t care.\u00a0 They already act like teenagers, thinking they can do anything they want and that they can make their own decisions and I can\u2019t get through to them (despite my sometimes over the top consequences).<\/p>\n<p>I know fear is not a solution and I definitely don\u2019t want my kids to be afraid of me but I wish they were afraid of the consequences enough that they made better choices.\u00a0 Instead they make the same terrible choices over and over again and then freak out about the received consequences.<\/p>\n<p>It is just so exhausting, overwhelming and frankly, soul breaking.\u00a0 Doing the right thing day in and day out, reacting to every bad choice my children make and still getting nowhere.\u00a0 Sometimes parenting is a thankless job but I just keep hoping that by working so tirelessly now, I\u2019m creating future good people.\u00a0 (right?!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something happened on Friday: I lost it.
