{"id":5081,"date":"2014-06-27T08:17:18","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T12:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=5081"},"modified":"2017-02-07T16:37:35","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T21:37:35","slug":"reuse-car-seats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/27\/reuse-car-seats\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Reuse Car Seats, Just Recycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are many reasons a child car seat should be properly destroyed and not used again.\u00a0 Manufacturer guidelines are very strict on when it is not safe to use a car seat again including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" width=\"240\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01318-1000x664.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a> If it is expired<\/b>.\u00a0 All child car seats have an expiration date which is usually 5 to 10 years after the date of manufacture.\u00a0 The expiration date can usually be found on a sticker on the underside of the seat or stamped into the plastic and will usually say \u201cDo not use after\u2026\u201d\u00a0 A lot of people believe expiration dates are a ploy by the manufacture to get you to buy more seats.\u00a0 The truth is the manufacture cannot guarantee the seat will properly protect your child after the expiration date due to materials breaking down over time.<\/li>\n<li><b>It\u2019s been recalled or is defective<\/b>.\u00a0 If a car seat has been recalled the manufacturer will send you replacement parts if possible or they may issue you a refund or send you a completely new seat.\u00a0 If your seat is recalled or defective and not repairable, it should not be used in the car again for any reason.<\/li>\n<li><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397-300x452.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397-600x903.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397-166x250.jpg 166w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC01319-e1403871397397.jpg 1520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>It\u2019s been in an accident<\/b>.\u00a0 Most car seat manufactures require child car seats to be replaced after ANY accident, even if the car seat was unoccupied.\u00a0 The stress on the shell from the LATCH strap\/vehicle seatbelt and the strain on the harness if a child was in the seat can make the seat unable to properly restrain a child in the future.\u00a0 Car seats are a life saving device and like bike helmets are only designed to provide protection one time.<\/li>\n<li><b>It\u2019s been mistreated<\/b>.\u00a0 Car seat manufacturers are very specific on how car seat covers and shells should be cleaned and it is important to know the harness straps should NEVER be soaked but rather wiped clean with a baby wipe or washrag using only mild soap.\u00a0 Soaking the straps can cause the fibers of the harness to break down and weaken.\u00a0 Also, if a car seat has been dropped, checked on an airplane or been otherwise mistreated it should be closely looked over to determine if it\u2019s still safe and reliable to use.<\/li>\n<li><b>If it is no longer the right size for your child.<\/b>\u00a0 If your child has exceeded the weight or height limits of their car seat they need a new one, no exceptions. (Though this is the only case where it would be appropriate to sell or giveaway a used car seat, assuming none of the above factors compromise the safety of the seat).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what if you have a car seat that can\u2019t be reused?\u00a0 It needs to be destroyed, completely, in order to prevent someone from picking it up, using it and endangering a child\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Most experts say simply cutting the straps, removing the cover and writing \u201cCrashed\u201d in sharpie all over the shell is good enough.\u00a0 Some people go at the shell with a sledge-hammer or saw it in half to make it completely unusable.\u00a0 It\u2019s then recommended that you throw the pieces in the trash on separate days in black trash bags.<\/p>\n<p>But most car seats are plastic, so why not recycle it?\u00a0 Most recyclers will not take items that are of mixed materials (which car seats are with their plastic, metal and fabric pieces).\u00a0 So when I had a car seat that was defective (and had been replaced for free by the manufacturer), I decided to take it apart completely and recycle what I could.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Recycle a car seat:<\/h2>\n<h4>1. Sort all the pieces by type. Cut the shell in half to ensure the car seat can&#8217;t be used again (and to help it fit in the\u00a0bin!)<a
