{"id":5004,"date":"2014-06-20T09:04:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-20T13:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=5004"},"modified":"2014-06-20T09:04:50","modified_gmt":"2014-06-20T13:04:50","slug":"lets-almost-talk-about-sex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/20\/lets-almost-talk-about-sex\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s (almost) Talk about Sex"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>It\u2019s amazing how a casual conversation at lunch can quickly turn into one of the most panicked situations of parenting.\u00a0 Ok, so maybe I\u2019m being a little overdramatic, the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/27\/sharing-love-and-time\/\">Honeybun hit her head and had a seizure<\/a> Easter morning was way worse than what happened yesterday, but I still almost peed my pants!<\/p>\n<p>Somehow during lunch with my parents we got on the topic of Oklahoma (I <i>think<\/i> Honeybun asked if she used to live there).\u00a0 We discussed how mommy and daddy lived there before she was born but that she had been there before.\u00a0 My dad refuted this fact and I reminded him we went when she was just one to see an Oklahoma State football game.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation then turned to a friend who had had a miscarriage which, of course, made Honeybun ask \u201cwhat\u2019s a miscarriage?\u201d\u00a0 No big deal, I\u2019m cool with answering that question, chances are someone close to us will have a miscarriage sometime in the future and she should know what it means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA miscarriage is when a baby in it\u2019s mommy\u2019s belly dies.\u201d\u00a0 She looked stunned.\u00a0 \u201cBabies can die in their mommy\u2019s bellies?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, not all babies live until they are born.\u00a0 A miscarriage is when a tiny little baby that is just starting to grow in a mommy\u2019s tummy doesn\u2019t grow right or isn\u2019t strong enough and it dies.\u00a0 It\u2019s very sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5005 alignright\" alt=\"DSC00084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084-390x293.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/DSC00084.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>And then it happened: \u201cHow do babies get in the mommy\u2019s tummy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holy camoly\u2026ummmm\u2026.my parents and I all burst out in laughter and my face turned hot and I thought about running away. This, just hours after the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/19\/stuck-on-sexy\/\"> &#8220;sexy&#8221; talk<\/a>, why me?!?! \u00a0But you can\u2019t run away from your problems so I charged at it head on.\u00a0 \u201cWell, babies start from eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike chickens?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKind of.\u00a0 Mommies, well all women including you and Sugarplum, are born with lots and lots of eggs in their bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d\u00a0 I paused and waited.\u00a0 That was it, for now.\u00a0 In all honesty, I&#8217;m surprised we made it this long without the question coming up. \u00a0She saw her baby sister and brother growing in my belly and she saw her brother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/20\/a-birth-story\/\">come OUT<\/a> of my belly so the asking how babies get in is a logical question.<\/p>\n<p>I know it will come back up and there will be more follow up questions and I\u2019ll take those as they come but I guess I need to do more thinking on what I\u2019ll say about the WHOLE thing should I need to in the future.\u00a0 I\u2019m not one to lie to my kids about anything, but I also don\u2019t want to give them more information than they ask for nor do I want them to know more than they need to.\u00a0 I also don\u2019t want to be <i>that mommy<\/i> who tells her kids everything (like Santa isn\u2019t real) and then has my kid tell the other kids and ruin their lives.<\/p>\n<p>I strongly believe in children being children and not growing too fast, I don\u2019t know that the concept of sex should be a taboo thing that children shouldn\u2019t know about (though I obviously think it\u2019s something that should only be enjoyed by adults as I told Honeybun<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/10\/struggling-with-the-sexiness\/\"> once before when sex came up<\/a>) but society says sex should be secret and so it makes me uneasy discussing it with my very young girls.<\/p>\n<p>When do you plan to have \u201cthe talk?\u201d with your kids? \u00a0Will you do with your partner or will daddy talk to the boys and mommy talk to the boys?\u00a0 For now I think I\u2019ll go with the \u201ctake it as it comes\u201d approach and hopefully will have backup when the the time comes for the big talk!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s amazing how a casual conversation at lunch can quickly turn into one of the most panicked situations of parenting.\u00a0 Ok, so maybe I\u2019m being a little overdramatic, the time Honeybun hit her head and had a seizure Easter morning was way worse than what happened yesterday, but I still almost peed my pants!
