Well, it happened.\u00a0 My fear of \u201csexy\u201d<\/a> coming into the lives of my very young girls happened.\u00a0 As they were getting ready for bed last night, I heard Honeybun whisper to Sugarplum \u201clook at me, I\u2019m sexy!\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been having a lot of \u201cbathroom\u201d talk lately.\u00a0 The girls have taken to making everything into a poop, pee, or penis joke and spend their days cracking up about it (\u201cLet it go, let it go, can\u2019t pee on my head anymore\u2026\u201d)\u00a0 So when the \u201csexy\u201d remark came around I reacted the same way \u201cyou don\u2019t need to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then what I\u2019ve been dreading: \u201cWhy?\u00a0 Is it bad?\u201d<\/p>\n

Oh man, where do I go from here?\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you think it means?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFashional.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean fashionable?\u00a0 It\u2019s not fashionable.\u00a0 It\u2019s like calling someone fat, it\u2019s just something we don\u2019t need to say or talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n

I left it at that.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure where else to go, what I wanted to say and I still haven\u2019t decided what I want them to know or feel about it.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been thinking about what \u201csexy\u201d is to me.\u00a0 Is it something I am?\u00a0 Not usually.\u00a0 Is it something I want to be?\u00a0 Not really anymore.\u00a0 When I tried to be sexy in the past, what was it that appealed to me?<\/p>\n

As a young adult I definitely fell into the \u201csexy makes you popular\u201d crowd.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t go around flaunting my stuff just to get attention but I also wasn\u2019t very modest (20 second quick changes in front of various stage hands will do that to you\u2026)\u00a0 When I first started dating hubby, I\u2019ll admit I showed more than usual when I knew I was going to see him.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 I guess because I thought that\u2019s what he would like (being a college-aged man and all).\u00a0 As we settled into our relationship, he confided that he preferred me to be more covered up.\u00a0 And I was okay with it, I really didn\u2019t care either way.<\/p>\n

Now I feel uncomfortable in low-cut tops and short skirts\/shorts<\/a> (yet breastfeeding uncovered in public<\/a> is you know, whatever).\u00a0 So what is sexy?\u00a0 Is it the objectification of women?\u00a0 Maybe, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Am I trying to stand up for women\u2019s lib?\u00a0 Not really.<\/p>\n

\"SONY<\/a>\u00a0Really, I want my kids to be kids.\u00a0 I want my little girls to be little girls while they can.\u00a0 I want them to be able to run through the sprinklers in their underwear if they want.\u00a0 But they can\u2019t, instead I make them wear 1 piece bathing suits anytime they\u2019re in the front yard because even though I see them as just little girls, I don\u2019t trust the rest of the world to see them that way (plus a neighbor down the road just got arrested for child pornography, so\u2026)<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t let my girls paint their nails and Honeybun has only worn makeup when performing in her dance concerts.\u00a0 I try to keep their clothes age appropriate (which is becoming harder as she gets closer to the 7-12 size range).<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want them worrying about what other people think of them or who they think they should be.\u00a0 I want them to make their own choices for who they are.\u00a0 I know they\u2019ll fall into peer pressure eventually and I know some day they\u2019ll want to be just like everyone else and I won\u2019t be so cool anymore (if I even am now) but until then I want to show them that what really matters is not what you put on your body, not what you show or what you cover up but what kind of person you are.<\/p>\n
