{"id":4547,"date":"2014-05-22T09:07:53","date_gmt":"2014-05-22T13:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=4547"},"modified":"2016-01-18T19:12:49","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T00:12:49","slug":"what-500-means","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/22\/what-500-means\/","title":{"rendered":"What 500 Means"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Today marks 488 days of Beyond Mommying and this is my 500<sup>th<\/sup> post!\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to wrap my head around what that actually means.<\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/what-its-all-about\/\">started Beyond Mommying<\/a> for pretty selfish reasons.\u00a0 After 6 months of job hunting, getting my hopes up and not getting where I wanted to go, I found myself as only a stay at home mommy of two with a third on the way and while I loved (and still do) being that, I was lost.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know who I was outside my children, I was seeking a personal identity, one that was just mine.<\/p>\n<p>I graduated college in three years (with essentially a double major).\u00a0 I completed my M.Ed. despite being put behind due to an unexpected hospital stay early in my pregnancy with Honeybun and doing three classes each semester after she was born while simultaneously working four different jobs.\u00a0 I spent two and a half years living abroad, traveling, creating new dance works and serving as President of the American Women\u2019s Club of Dublin.\u00a0 How was it that I couldn\u2019t get a decent job?\u00a0 What was wrong with me that no one saw my worth?<\/p>\n<p>So began Beyond Mommying, a way to share myself, my experiences, my knowledge.\u00a0 A way to feel relevant.\u00a0 I\u2019m still not sure what I wanted or expected in that moment and I\u2019m not sure if I\u2019ve met or exceeded my own expectations.\u00a0 But what I do know is this: Blogging has made me a better mommy.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like a funny thing to say because I often feel like the time I spend on Beyond Mommying could be better spent doing things for my family but when I look at Beyond Mommying, I can see all the ways it\u2019s benefited my family as well.<\/p>\n<p>Many bloggers focus on becoming \u201cmonetized\u201d and use their writing to support their families and while I think being able to do that would be really awesome, it\u2019s not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/26\/mission-reinforced\/\">my ultimate goal<\/a> and the benefits I\u2019ve received cannot be as easily quantified.<\/p>\n<p><b>I look at every moment closer and hold onto even the small things.\u00a0 <\/b>I write about my life and share what little bits of parenting and teaching wisdom I have.\u00a0 While before I would just breeze through the day without paying much attention, much of what I do know provides stories, leads me to post ideas or reminds me of things that would be good to share.\u00a0 I write down or actively remember the little things that happen and the funny things my kids say and do and then I archive them on Beyond Mommying.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4048\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00706-1000x664.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<b>I give my children more meaningful experiences.\u00a0 <\/b>One of my least favorite things about teaching preschool was the clean up after art projects.\u00a0 When I stopped working when Honeybun was a year old, I tried to keep up some of the art and creative experiences for her.\u00a0 But I still hated it.\u00a0 When Sugarplum came along, I was so overwhelmed it was a lost cause.\u00a0 But thanks to Beyond Mommying, I have a place to share their experiences and my knowledge of why they experiences are so important.\u00a0 I\u2019ve begun doing art with Sugarplum which she would get to do if she were attending preschool (though I stand firmly by my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/30\/parenting-vs-preschool\/\">\u201cParenting Vs. Preschool\u201d<\/a> decision).<\/p>\n<p><b>It has made me examine my parenting<\/b>.\u00a0 There\u2019s something about putting your life out in the public eye that makes you take a second look at things.\u00a0 While I have the power to share what I want, hide what I don\u2019t and lie if I want to, my goal has always been to share truthfully, good or bad.\u00a0 So with that goal in mind, \u00a0I\u2019ve found myself questioning my decisions, trying to do better and experimenting with new parenting tactics and systems hoping to not only make a difference in my family but to possibly find things that work that I can share with my readers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4424\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-1000x664.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC01070-390x259.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<b>I take more pictures<\/b>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always used my own photos on Beyond Mommying and I intend to always do so.\u00a0 For one, I don\u2019t want to deal with copyright issues but I also want my posts to be authentic and what is more authentic and truthful than sharing my family?\u00a0 I admit I take a lot of \u201cstock\u201d type photos for my blog posts but I also spend a tremendous amount of time going through old photos to find ones that fit the feeling and point I\u2019m trying to convey.\u00a0 I also take the time to photograph our daily lives more than I used to which not only enhances my blog posts but builds our library of memories.<\/p>\n<p><b>I read more, learn more and have found a community in which I fit in<\/b>.\u00a0 I admit I didn\u2019t read a lot of blogs before starting my own but now they main source of my free-time reading is other mommy\u2019s blogs.\u00a0 Truthfully, I used to discount the wisdom of a \u201cnon-expert\u201d but now that I am one, I realize the insight behind life experience and I now enjoy reading about other mommy\u2019s real life experiences more than general parenting articles which I used to focus on.\u00a0 I feel connected to the women whose stories I read and knowing I\u2019m not alone in this journey, that my feelings are not unusual and that there are women all over just like me makes me a more tolerant, loving and accepting of myself and my parenting style which trickles down to being more tolerant, loving and understanding of my children and our relationship struggles and shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks 488 days of Beyond Mommying and this is my 500th post!\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to wrap my head around what that actually means.
