{"id":4118,"date":"2014-04-26T07:35:59","date_gmt":"2014-04-26T11:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=4118"},"modified":"2014-05-20T15:51:52","modified_gmt":"2014-05-20T19:51:52","slug":"on-making-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/26\/on-making-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"On Making Mistakes&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s Weekend Wisdom comes from me and it is: Don\u2019t assume you know the way things are and if when it\u2019s really important, really pay attention!<\/p>\n<p>Doodle and I made it to Atlanta with very little excitement (though I\u2019ll have some great tips for car travel with little ones another time!)\u00a0 Doodle and I stayed the night with a great friends from Dublin who welcomed their first little one seven months ago and the boys got along great.<\/p>\n<p>We headed for breakfast then did a little shopping before meeting another friend from Dublin (weird, huh?) for lunch.\u00a0 After lunch I had about 2 hours before I was supposed to pick hubby up from the airport.\u00a0 I needed to fill up the car so stopped at a local station and that is when everything went wrong!<\/p>\n<p>I drove hubby\u2019s car up since it gets much better gas mileage than my new car.\u00a0 He has a Volkswagen Passat TDI.\u00a0 For those who don\u2019t know, TDI indicates it\u2019s a diesel engine.\u00a0 The first filling station I passed didn\u2019t have diesel so I went on the, the next one had diesel on the signage so I pulled in.\u00a0 I looked for the telling green nozzle and pulled up.<\/p>\n<p>The price was a little high and the neighborhood was a little shady so I was contemplating just getting enough and how much was enough when I began fueling. Then I noticed the price: $3.699.\u00a0 Holy.Shit! I quickly turned off the pump.\u00a0 I had put 6\/10 of a gallon of regular gas in the car.\u00a0 There are bright yellow stickers all over the gas tank: Do not use regular gasoline!\u00a0 Even a small amount can damage your engine!\u00a0 Shit!<\/p>\n<p>Hubby is a smart guy and keeps his keys on the original ring from the dealer which, luckily, clearly shows the Volkswagen Roadside Assistance number.\u00a0 And luckily when we bought the car the deal was very, very, very clear on the fact that we should never, NEVER, drive the car if we accidentally put gas in it.\u00a0 Instead, we must immediately call for help.<\/p>\n<p>So I did.\u00a0 \u201cAre you in a safe location?\u201d\u00a0 Kind of\u2026\u00a0 \u201cWhat is your problem?\u201d\u00a0 I explain the situation.\u00a0 \u201cWhere are you?\u201d\u00a0 umm\u2026good question!\u00a0 I don\u2019t exactly know.\u00a0 Atlanta, somewhere?\u00a0 I had to grab Doodle and go into the station to ask for address because I didn\u2019t even know what street I was on!\u00a0 Got that settled and I am told they will call a tow truck who will tow me to the nearest VW dealer.\u00a0 Ok, great!\u00a0 They\u2019ll also text me the information for the tow company and expected arrival time.\u00a0 Awesome.<\/p>\n<p>I get the text, the tow truck will be there in approximately an hour and fifteen minutes?\u00a0 An HOUR?\u00a0 Holy.Shit! I\u2019m in an unknown area with an infant in a broke down car in th south in the late Spring! \u00a0I call the tow company and explain the situation. I have to call back VW. I call back VW and am informed an hour is average and there is nothing they can do and then told (in a very direct way) \u201cMa\u2019am, if you have an emergency, I advise you to call 911.\u201d\u00a0 WHAT?!?!?!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4120 alignleft\" alt=\"IMAG0495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-179x300.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-300x502.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-600x1003.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-150x250.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-612x1024.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495-1000x1672.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0495.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I wait. \u00a0I was able to get a hold of hubby just before take off (&#8220;Sir, you need to turn off your phone, please&#8230;&#8221;) to let him know what happened and that I wouldn&#8217;t be there to get him. \u00a0I take Doodle out of his car seat and let him play in the backseat (luckily I moved the girls\u2019 seats into my parents\u2019 car before we left so there was plenty of room for me to sit and Doodle to play). \u00a0And I call my mom and I cry and I yell and I curse. \u00a0And I wait. \u00a0Atlanta traffic kind of sucks and it was 4:00 on a Friday so it was nearly 2 hours before the truck actually arrived but Doodle didn\u2019t even notice.<\/p>\n<p>He had the best time crawling around the back seat, just happy to not have to be in his car seat an thought it was so funny to climb in and out (and in. and out.) \u00a0We sang songs, read books, played with toys and tried to ignore the drifters riffling through the trash right next to our car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4121 alignright\" style=\"font-size: 13px;\" alt=\"IMAG0497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0497-300x179.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0497-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0497-600x359.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0497-390x233.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0497-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0497-1000x598.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The truck driver called me when he was on the way and I informed him I had the baby and asked if he had room in the truck or if I should call a friend for a ride.\u00a0 He said\u00a0 he had a third seat and I asked if there were airbags which he said there were none on the passenger side.\u00a0 So when the truck arrived, I installed Doodle\u2019s car seat in the middle while the driver loaded up hubby\u2019s car.<\/p>\n<p>Doodle was fascinated by the seat belt and couldn&#8217;t figure out daddy&#8217;s car being right outside the back window! \u00a0He had a little snack and then fell asleep.<\/p>\n<p>When hubby landed, he hopped in a cab and arrived at the VW dealership just before we did.\u00a0 It was an hour before closing and I explained what happened. \u00a0They were unable to take care of it but gave us a loaner car and told us it would be taken care of today.\u00a0 It was some of the best customer service I\u2019ve ever experienced!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4119 alignright\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\" alt=\"IMAG0494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-179x300.jpg\" width=\"143\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-300x502.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-600x1003.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-612x1024.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-1000x1672.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494-390x652.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMAG0494.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/>So, how did this happen?\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s simple really.\u00a0 Diesel nozzles are always green.\u00a0 Well, almost always.\u00a0 Turns out, at BP stations, regular gas is green and diesel is black.\u00a0 I chose the green one from the line up and luckily noticed it was wrong before filling the whole tank.<\/p>\n<p>The tow truck driver was really quiet but a few minutes into the drive tentatively said \u201cDon\u2019t feel bad about what happened.\u00a0 I did it once too and had to drain my tank in the parking lot at Kroger.\u201d\u00a0 The customer service reps at the dealership also told us that they see the same thing a lot with people making the same mistake at BP stations.<\/p>\n<p>So it really wasn\u2019t completely my fault, but I felt like a complete idiot.\u00a0 If I had paid more attention and read the signs, it wouldn\u2019t have happened. \u00a0But it\u2019s not like I forgot or like I wasn\u2019t paying attention.\u00a0 I was conscientious that I needed diesel.\u00a0 I looked for a station that had it and then went to the green nozzle as usual.<\/p>\n<p>And at least I knew not to drive it.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even start the car to run the air, Doodle and I sat in the hot car with the door cracked just enough to circulate the air.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad that I was so careful and knowledgeable because when we got to the dealer and I told them I didn\u2019t turn it on knowing I\u2019d made a mistake I was told \u201cthat\u2019s good because if you\u00a0 had, you\u2019d be looking a new engine.\u201d\u00a0 Holy.Shit!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s Weekend Wisdom comes from me and it is: Don\u2019t assume you know the way things are and if when it\u2019s really important, really pay attention!
