{"id":4032,"date":"2014-04-17T09:38:13","date_gmt":"2014-04-17T13:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=4032"},"modified":"2014-04-17T09:38:13","modified_gmt":"2014-04-17T13:38:13","slug":"update-waste-free-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/17\/update-waste-free-wednesday\/","title":{"rendered":"UPDATE: Waste Free Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Honeybun&#8217;s school has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/20\/waste-free-wednesday\/\">&#8220;Waste Free Wednesday&#8221;<\/a> program in which students get rewarded with a pin for any Wednesday they have no trash in their lunch. \u00a0They are trying to encourage reusable items over plastic bags, paper napkins and brown paper sacks. \u00a0I&#8217;m all for the re-usability and 90% of the time the only trash Honeybun has in her lunch in a Gogurt (she has a reusable water bottle and I always send her food in plastic containers with a reusable fork or spoon).<\/p>\n<p>I gave up on trying to be &#8220;waste free&#8221; because 1) the one day I did it, she didn&#8217;t get the stupid pin and 2) I give her Gogurt in place of milk which I freeze so it is still cold by lunch time. \u00a0The one day I gave her regular yogurt I had to pack it with an icepack (umm, chemicals anyone?) and I still had the trash at home. \u00a0So why bother?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4033\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-1000x664.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DSC00660-390x259.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>But really upsets me is field trips. \u00a0Last Thursday, the day after &#8220;Waste Free Wednesday&#8221; she had a field trip and her ENTIRE lunch had to be able to be thrown away, for convenience. \u00a0What is that teaching the kids? \u00a0Recycling is good, but only when it&#8217;s easy and\/or convenient?
