{"id":382,"date":"2013-02-27T08:15:07","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T13:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=382"},"modified":"2016-01-18T21:09:12","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T02:09:12","slug":"preschool-sassing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/27\/preschool-sassing\/","title":{"rendered":"Preschool Sassing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nothing in my mommying life makes me more outright angry than when my children argue, backtalk and give me attitude.\u00a0 In the most extreme cases it makes my blood boil and my heart feel like it\u2019s going to explode.\u00a0 Honeybun is a champion at these skills and I cannot stand how she thinks she can have the last word in every situation.\u00a0 We are trying to teach her to be respectful and to just quietly listen when we are talking to her but she cannot control herself and always has to say SOMETHING.\u00a0 Her favorite last words are \u201cNo,\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t want to,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s not my\/your choice,\u201d and my all-time favorite \u201cit\u2019s not my life!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I try to avoid power struggles (something I could write for days about, and will sometime) and am also not a good threaten-er.\u00a0 I\u2019m a doer.\u00a0 I don\u2019t threaten my children with consequences unless I\u2019m going to follow through and in the most extreme cases with Honeybun&#8217;s\u00a0attitude I often don\u2019t even threaten, I just do.\u00a0 If she is going to have the last word (usually in a hysterical screaming voice) then I will not give her the luxury of any of my words.\u00a0 Into her room she goes or away her favorite things go.\u00a0 And most importantly into another part of the house I go, away from her inappropriate behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>Usually this results in mass hysteria of Honeybun\u00a0screaming and sometimes throwing things (another pet peeve of mine\u2026that one really gets her in trouble with me) and Sugarplum trying to be with her and not understanding why we need to leave Honeybun\u00a0alone (read Mommy Mantra for a run-down of the typical scenario).\u00a0 In addition to being a doer, I\u2019m also not a giver-inner.\u00a0 If I say something I mean it and I follow through.<\/p>\n<p>When Honeybun\u00a0loses her favorite things, she is required to earn them back, one at a time.\u00a0 She can re-earn one thing each day she goes without a major attitude situation (no screaming, hysterical crying, throwing or general nastiness).\u00a0 She is slowly learning to control her temper and even told me the other night \u201cMommy, earlier I felt myself getting nasty and I stopped and fixed my attitude.\u00a0 Can I have an animal back today?\u201d\u00a0 I truly appreciate that she is starting to take ownership of her behavior and I hope that it will also help Sugarplum learn to do the same (in time, she\u2019s still kinda little).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nothing in my mommying life makes me more outright angry than when my children argue, backtalk and give me attitude.\u00a0 In the most extreme cases it makes my blood boil and my heart feel like it\u2019s going to explode.\u00a0 Honeybun is a champion at these skills and I cannot stand how she thinks she can [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13,284],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-382","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-a-mommys-life","category-the-home-school-zone"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/382","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=382"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/382\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":10059,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/382\/revisions\/10059"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=382"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=382"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=382"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
