From before a child is even born, most parents do everything they can to ensure their children&#8217;s well-being. Unfortunately it&#8217;s impossible to protect our children from every hazard and possible bad outcome but there are things we can do to help ensure their safety and one of those things is to always properly restrain our children in the car.<\/p>\n<p>Once educated and equipped with the proper seats, ensuring a child&#8217;s safety in the car becomes a simple routine. Yet a large number of children are not properly restrained in the car and the results can be devastating.<\/p>\n<h2>Here are a few car seat safety facts you may not know:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/03\/child-restraint-safety-stats\/car-seat-safety-stats\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12322\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/car-seat-safety-stats.png\" alt=\"Car Seat Safety Facts: A large number of children are not properly restrained in the car and the results can be devastating.\" width=\"749\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/car-seat-safety-stats.png 749w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/car-seat-safety-stats-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/car-seat-safety-stats-600x385.png 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/car-seat-safety-stats-390x250.png 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Car crashes are the number one cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of 1 and 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safekids.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/skw_motor_vehicle_fact_sheet_2016_final.pdf\">[6]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>15% of all car crash fatalities are children <a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2011\/03\/21\/peds.2011-0215.full.pdf\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>21% of children under the age of 1 and under 20 pounds do not ride in a rear-facing car seat <a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2011\/03\/21\/peds.2011-0215.full.pdf\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Approximately a third of all harnessed car seats are installed using the wrong belt path (using the rear-facing belt path for a forward-facing seat or the forward-facing belt path with a rear-facing seat) <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812142\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Only 42% of forward-facing car seats are installed using the top tether strap <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812142\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0even though top tether use reduces head injuries in car crashes.<\/li>\n<li>Only half of all car seat chest clips are\u00a0placed appropriately at the chest\/armpit level <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/news\/2009\/06\/the-top-tether-and-forward-facing-car-seat-installations\/index.htm\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>About two-thirds of all\u00a0children in harnessed car seats do not have properly tightened straps <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812142\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0(see how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/24\/car-seat-check\/\">test using the &#8220;pinch&#8221; test<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Only 60% of drivers read their car seat manuals and less than 15% have referenced their car manual for installation instructions <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812142\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>16% of rear-facing infant seats and 12% of rear-facing convertible seats are installed at an improper recline <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812157\">[5]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>85% of drivers are confident they are properly using their car seats \u00a0though almost half\u00a0of all child restraints are used improperly including loose harness straps and improper installation <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812142\">[4]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Car seat use reduces infant mortality in car crashes by 71% and 54% for children aged 1-4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/motorvehiclesafety\/child_passenger_safety\/cps-factsheet.html\">[1]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Booster seats reduce serious injury in children aged 4-8 by 45% compared to using a seatbelt alone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/motorvehiclesafety\/child_passenger_safety\/cps-factsheet.html\">[1]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>One third of children who died in car crashes in 2011 were not restrained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/childpassengersafety\/index.html\">[2]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Around 1 in 10\u00a0children using a booster\u00a0rides with\u00a0the seat belt on their abdomen or rib cage rather than properly across the hip or thighs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/812157\">[5]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>See\u00a0my full list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/06\/car-seat-safety\/\">Car seat safety posts<\/a>\u00a0for more information on keeping your kids safe in the car.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Pin it!
