{"id":3529,"date":"2014-03-13T08:31:27","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T12:31:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=3529"},"modified":"2014-03-22T22:02:02","modified_gmt":"2014-03-23T02:02:02","slug":"on-a-deserted-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/13\/on-a-deserted-island\/","title":{"rendered":"On A Deserted Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s the age-old question: If you were stuck on a deserted island with any 4 people, dead or alive, who would you choose?\u00a0 Brad Pitt?\u00a0 Albert Einstein?\u00a0 Anna Pavlova?\u00a0 Abraham Lincoln? \u00a0Babe Ruth? \u00a0Mother Theresa?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3530 alignright\" alt=\"DSC01902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902-390x293.jpg 390w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/DSC01902.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0For me, the answer is extremely easy: I\u2019d choose hubby and our 3 children.\u00a0 And I really, truly mean it. \u00a0Sure, I have my days when I dream of running away to a deserted island by myself but really, I would want my family there with me.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, how cool would it be to be able to do whatever you wanted whenever you wanted without the social constraints and expectations of society?\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t it be awesome to have unlimited time to spend together without having to fit within the schedule framework of school, work, store opening hours, etc.\u00a0 What it would give you is total freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Freedom to be together uninterrupted, to experience and learn about your world together, to teach your children what you want them to know, not what some bureaucrat says they should know.\u00a0 They would get to learn by seeing, exploring, doing rather than sitting in a desk or staring at a workbook.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_1070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3531 alignleft\" alt=\"IMG_1070\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_1070-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_1070-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_1070-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_1070-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/IMG_1070-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0They would be forced to create their own entertainment, to play with what they had and develop their own games.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure there would still be plenty of \u201cI\u2019m bored&#8221; moments as that\u2019s just a part of growing up and they\u2019d be fighting over the biggest coconut instead of mommy\u2019s iPad but they\u2019d be learning to share, work together and get along.<\/p>\n<p>You could teach them to be the type of person you want them to be and what matters most to you.\u00a0 But without the social constraints of right and wrong, what would be most important?\u00a0 Would it matter if they swore?\u00a0 Probably not (and being on a deserted island with hubby would give them plenty of opportunity to learn curse words!).\u00a0 Would it matter if they wanted to run around wild and be loud?\u00a0 Absolutely not.\u00a0 So what would matter?\u00a0 I would still expect them to be compassionate, respectful, loving and caring.<\/p>\n<p>For me, this isn&#8217;t just some silly question with a hypothetical answer. \u00a0Sometimes this world just gets too overwhelming for me and the expectations are so extreme that it&#8217;s hard to keep my head in the game. \u00a0Sometimes I just want to throw in the towel and recede with my kids to a far away corner where we can just live and love each other uninterrupted and unbothered by the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>I think as parents it&#8217;s so easy to get caught up in what other people expect of our children that we lose sight (or run out of time and energy) of what is really important to us and our families.\u00a0 What really matters to me may not matter to you or to the guy sitting at the table next to us at a restaurant or to the school principal.\u00a0 We each have our own set of ideals and I just wish I had the deserted island to raise my children the way I want to 100% of the time.<\/p>\n<p>(I\u2019ve also always thought it would be really awesome to be able to live a life where you slept when you were tired and ate when you were hungry instead of living on the 24-hour, every second scheduled clock!)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s the age-old question: If you were stuck on a deserted island with any 4 people, dead or alive, who would you choose?\u00a0 Brad Pitt?\u00a0 Albert Einstein?\u00a0 Anna Pavlova?\u00a0 Abraham Lincoln? \u00a0Babe Ruth? \u00a0Mother Theresa? \u00a0For me, the answer is extremely easy: I\u2019d choose hubby and our 3 children.\u00a0 And I really, truly mean it.
