<\/a>Because Stockholm is an archipelago (a bunch of islands grouped together) and we were on a large cruise ship, we had to take a bus transfer an hour into the city.\u00a0 Once in the city, we were dropped off by the Opera House and had the day to explore on our own.\u00a0 We walked past the royal palace on the island of Gamla Stan and decided to take a ferry (one of the great public transport options Stockholm provides) to Djurg\u00e5rden which is the island where many of the great tourist stops are.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n After the Vasa ship, we headed towards the Skansen museum and Zoo just down the road.\u00a0 Skansen is the world\u2019s first open air museum which houses tons of old Swedish buildings and is set up to make it feel like stepping back through Swedish history.\u00a0 This was our 2<\/span>nd<\/sup> open air museum (the first being in Oslo) and it did not disappoint.\u00a0 The animals which comprise the Zoo portion are scattered throughout and amongst the buildings so all of us were entertained.\u00a0 We could have spent all day there without getting bored but unfortunately ran out of time with needing to get back to the bus and ship. <\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span> We rushed back to Gamla Stan, worried about the ferry time tables and missing the bus so had a bit of extra time to wander around the cute old town with lots of little shops and eateries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" We spent 1 day in Stockholm, Sweden during our first family cruise which was a tour of the Baltic region. \u00a0Honeybun had just turned 3 years and Sugarplum was just shy of 1 year.\u00a0 We only got to spend 1 day in the city and it is definitely a place I want to go back […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2825","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tiny-travellers"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2825","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2825"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2825\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2834,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2825\/revisions\/2834"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2825"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2825"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2825"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}Our first stop was the Vasa Ship Museum.\u00a0 The Vasa was a ship that sank of the coast of Stockholm during its maiden voyage in 1628 and was recovered from the water in the 1960s and preserved.\u00a0 The ship is now housed in a large museum with exhibits on the history of the ship, world history at the time of the ship\u2019s sailing and the recovery and preservation process.\u00a0 While the ship is extremely fragile and only for looking at, the museum includes many life-size reconstructions of areas of the ships which can be climbed on and explored.\u00a0 Honeybun loved every second of exploring the reconstructions though she didn\u2019t care as much for the other exhibits that were less interactive.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
