{"id":2786,"date":"2014-01-10T07:49:04","date_gmt":"2014-01-10T12:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=2786"},"modified":"2016-01-18T20:44:03","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T01:44:03","slug":"the-forgotten-folder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/10\/the-forgotten-folder\/","title":{"rendered":"The Forgotten Folder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Honeybun forgot her homework folder today. \u00a0Again.\u00a0 This is\u00a0 the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> or 4<sup>th<\/sup> time we\u2019ve forgotten to take it back at the end of the week.\u00a0 Luckily, she and hubby were only part way down the street when I realized and they were easily able to turn around and meet me.\u00a0 The first time we dropped it in the front office after school and the other times we just took it back on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>But today\u2019s events made me wonder: whose responsibility is it to remember to take homework back at the end of the week?<\/p>\n<p>The educator in me says: the child needs to take ownership of her own learning and be responsible for completing the tasks required.<\/p>\n<p>The child development specialist in me says: remembering to take her homework folder back once a week (rather than every day) is a bit of an advanced skill for a 5 year old.<\/p>\n<p>The mommy in me says: This is crap.\u00a0 If a child can\u2019t complete the task on their own, should they even be assigned the task?\u00a0 I shouldn\u2019t have to sit down with my child every day after school for a half hour or more (while my other children go crazy) to complete her homework.\u00a0 If she can\u2019t do the task without supervision (I\u2019m cool with going over the directions with her and monitoring her progress, but not with having to be involved with every move as she does it) then why is she being required to do it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0How do you feel about homework?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2789 alignright\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC09656-390x259.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong>Side note: Homework has gotten a lot better for us since starting in October (see\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.7;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/03\/parentwork\/\">&#8220;Parentwork&#8221;<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">). \u00a0Part of our struggle was my preference to come home and get it done. \u00a0I realized Honeybun needs some &#8220;off-time&#8221;
