{"id":1431,"date":"2013-09-10T12:12:13","date_gmt":"2013-09-10T16:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=1431"},"modified":"2014-09-11T19:30:15","modified_gmt":"2014-09-11T23:30:15","slug":"not-just-toast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/10\/not-just-toast\/","title":{"rendered":"Not just Toast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So my little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/09\/burnt-toast\/\">toast rant <\/a>yesterday clearly wasn\u2019t about toast (ok, a little bit about toast\u2026I really hate burnt things!)<\/p>\n<p>As a mommy, I am used to giving and giving of myself.\u00a0 I give to my children, I give to my hubby, I give to my friends, I give to my work.\u00a0 By the time I take care of everyone else there often isn\u2019t time to take care of me.\u00a0 And even if there is time, I NEVER have the energy to do more than the bare minimum for myself.<\/p>\n<p>I shower when my children are napping, I eat when they eat and usually eat what they want (unless I can convince them that what I want is better).\u00a0 I sleep when they sleep and wake when they wake, day and night.\u00a0 I generally cook three meals a day and though I have coffee most days, I never get a \u201ccoffee break.\u201d Either I\u2019m drinking my coffee cold hours after I make it or if I go out for coffee I\u2019m managing the kids the whole time and drinking it as fast as I can before they lose their minds (or I lose mine?).<\/p>\n<p>So basically I spend all my time and energy taking care of others, making sure things get done for everyone else and that everyone is well taken care of but no one is taking care of me.\u00a0 The burnt toast really represents me.\u00a0 I often feel forgotten, neglected and disgusting which sometimes makes me cold natured.<\/p>\n<p>I realize this is what I \u201csigned up for\u201d when I decided to have kids, but not really.\u00a0 While I love that I get to be home with my kids and share every moment with them and shape who they are becoming, I never expected to so thoroughly lose myself in the process.\u00a0 Nearly every second of every day is spent on them and for them.<\/p>\n<p>The time spent on me is really just a matter of survival, not even basic upkeep.\u00a0 My \u201cme\u201d time involves, showering and sleeping.\u00a0 Even most of my eating and pottying involves at least one small person (and if not then a cat).\u00a0 I don\u2019t do my hair (other than brushing it and putting it in a clip), I don\u2019t wear makeup, I wear whatever is clean in the hamper (wrinkles and all) and only shave when I can feel the wind in my leg hair (gross?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 True? \u00a0Absolutely.)<\/p>\n<p>Any time I\u2019m not with my kids I\u2019m either running errands or working. \u00a0While I am excited to be back teaching again and enjoy it, it\u2019s still not something I\u2019m doing just for ME.\u00a0 It still involves doing for others and unfortunately adds to the lack of time and energy problem.<\/p>\n<p>There is always the lingering hope that as my children get older they\u2019ll need me less and I\u2019ll get back to myself eventually but kindergarten is proving the opposite.\u00a0 It has caused us to have more to do at home with less time to do it (my new work schedule sure doesn\u2019t help either as I\u2019m gone 3 nights a week).\u00a0 Maybe when they\u2019re all in middle school?\u00a0 Only 10 years to go\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So my little toast rant yesterday clearly wasn\u2019t about toast (ok, a little bit about toast\u2026I really hate burnt things!)
