{"id":1391,"date":"2013-08-30T12:54:25","date_gmt":"2013-08-30T16:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=1391"},"modified":"2016-01-18T20:58:50","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T01:58:50","slug":"back-to-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/30\/back-to-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week Honeybun&#8217;s\u00a0school had their \u201cback to school\u201d nights where parents were invited into the classrooms (without the kids) to meet the teacher, learn about the classroom and school and find out about the curriculum and expectations.\u00a0 It was important to us that hubby and I both attend so we hired a babysitter for the girls and I got permission to bring my \u201cquiet\u201d baby with us (of course he thought he should talk the whole time \u00a0and spit up all over the floor but at least he didn\u2019t cry!).<\/p>\n<p>I am so glad we went because after attending I feel so much more comfortable with our kindergarten situation and the experience Honeybun\u00a0is going to have.\u00a0 Most importantly, I love her teacher.\u00a0 No, seriously, I LOVE her!\u00a0 She totally seems like the type of person I would be friends with outside of school (and hubby likes her too cause she grew up 25 miles from where he did). \u00a0She seems to have a lot of the same views of talking to and dealing with children I do.\u00a0 She is no nonsense but in a loving, best for the children kind of way, expecting them to act responsibly and respectfully at all times.<\/p>\n<p>I was also happy to hear there will be no formal homework until October.\u00a0 Back in January I described how we opted out of the pre-school homework last year (see\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.7;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/23\/battle-of-mommy-vs-educator\/\">&#8220;Battle of Mommy vs. Educator&#8221;<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">) and I\u2019ve been concerned about how it would work this year.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think homework is necessary or appropriate for 5 year olds and I was concerned with it taking too much time and priority in our family.\u00a0 During September they will be working on learning sight words but reviewing these will be the extent of their \u201chomework\u201d until October and I am more than happy to have one more month of free afternoons while we settle into our new routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All of the schools in Florida are adopting the \u201cCommon Core\u201d curriculum which is also being implemented in 45 other states.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to know that if we ever move, the standards will most likely be the same (so long as we don\u2019t move internationally again!).\u00a0 While I need to do more research into the curriculum, I am very disappointed to see the curriculum only covers 2 areas of learning: English Language Arts and Mathematics.\u00a0 What has happened to science and social studies?\u00a0 I mean, I know most anything can be found online these days (I mean, I\u2019m the ultimate googler!) but I still think it\u2019s so important to know about your world, and that\u2019s what science and social studies teach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1393 alignright\" alt=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688-376x250.jpg 376w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/DSC09688-390x259.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I was also very surprised to hear that nowhere in the curriculum is penmanship\/handwriting covered.
