{"id":1335,"date":"2013-08-23T14:59:51","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T18:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/?p=1335"},"modified":"2013-11-22T16:29:37","modified_gmt":"2013-11-22T21:29:37","slug":"medicinal-milk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/23\/medicinal-milk\/","title":{"rendered":"Medicinal Milk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Poor Sugarplum is just now fully recovered from the stomach virus that struck while we were still in Colorado almost two week ago.\u00a0 It started with throwing up (see\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.7;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/11\/back-to-the-bowl\/\">&#8220;Back to the Bowl&#8221;<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">) and then a great day with no problems other than a little extra tiredness.\u00a0 The next day, though, we were back to throwing up after nap.\u00a0 She threw up twice that afternoon and despite reducing her diet to only water (1 oz at a time) and saltine crackers, she began throwing up again the next morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With less than 36 hours to take off for our flight home, and a child that looked like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Photo178.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1336\" alt=\"Photo178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Photo178-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Photo178-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Photo178.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I called her pediatrician and got a prescription called in for some nausea medicine to help us get through the travel day but I knew we didn\u2019t have time for a trip to the hospital for dehydration before the flight.\u00a0 My mom suggested maybe we needed to get her some Pedialyte but my mommy instincts said that wasn\u2019t a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Then I had an idea. I remembered when Honeybun\u00a0was a few months old and started throwing up.\u00a0 The pediatrician recommended nursing her 5 minutes (ONLY 5 minutes) every hour until she was vomit free for 4 hours then to slowly start increasing her feed time.\u00a0 Never once did they recommend any electrolyte replacement, water or anything else, just breast milk.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided to pump some breast milk for my poor little Sugarplum that couldn\u2019t even keep down water and crackers.\u00a0 I gave her 1 oz of my milk every 15-20 minutes.\u00a0 I made a big deal out of how special it was for her to have \u201cmommy milk\u201d and she thought it was so silly but she didn\u2019t throw up again.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few reasons I\u2019m thankful I had milk to give her and why I think it worked so well:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Human milk is made for humans.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to digest and gentle on sensitive tummies.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Breast milk contains antibodies.\u00a0 Any antibodies mommy\u2019s body is making can be found in her milk therefore if Sugarplum indeed had a virus and my body was exposed to it (which I\u2019m sure was expedited by the number of times I was drenched in puke), my milk contained the antibodies to fight the virus which may have helped her fight off the sickness faster and\/or easier.<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Breast milk, unlike water, has calories, electrolytes and lots of other goodies.\u00a0 Sugarplum was so hungry and didn\u2019t understand why when she continued to throw up we wouldn\u2019t let her eat.\u00a0 At least the milk gave her some calories and energy.<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Breast milk (at that time) was free and easily obtained.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have to run out to the store to get something special or spend tons of money on something that might not have worked or that we might not finish and would have to throw away.<\/p>\n<p>I realize not everyone has access to breast milk in these situations but I\u2019m so thankful I did.\u00a0 I cannot even imagine what the following days would have been like had I not had the breast milk option.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poor Sugarplum is just now fully recovered from the stomach virus that struck while we were still in Colorado almost two week ago.\u00a0 It started with throwing up (see\u00a0&#8220;Back to the Bowl&#8221;) and then a great day with no problems other than a little extra tiredness.\u00a0 The next day, though, we were back to throwing [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1335","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-breastfeeding","category-family-life"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1335","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1335"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1335\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1339,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1335\/revisions\/1339"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1335"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1335"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1335"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
