Through the use of four book vending machines placed at different city parks, the program aims to provide 100,000 <em>free<\/em> books to the children of Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Lauderdale was chosen last summer through the Book Battle poll on JetBlue&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soarwithreading.com\/\">Soar with Reading<\/a> page (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soarwithreading.com\/\">voting for next year&#8217;s city<\/a> is currently open) and through the use of innovative book vending machines, the children of Fort Lauderdale can take and keep as many books as they&#8217;d like throughout the summer.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/soar-into-reading.jpg\" alt=\"Jetblue Soar into Reading Program 2017 in Ft. Lauderdale\" width=\"451\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/soar-into-reading.jpg 451w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/soar-into-reading-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/soar-into-reading-298x250.jpg 298w, https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/soar-into-reading-390x327.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As an educator who has worked in diverse areas of the South Florida community, I know the importance of early literacy and the important role access to books plays in the lives of children and\u00a0I am grateful to have this program available to the children in my community.<\/p>\n<h3>What we know about Early Literacy:<\/h3>\n<p>One quarter of all American children grow up not learning how to read.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferstfoundation.org\/resources\/fifty-top-literacy-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(3)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nationally, it is estimated that only half of children between the ages of 3 and 5 are read to daily by a family member and children living in poverty are read to less often than their peers not living below the poverty line. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/grants\/facts-about-childrens-literacy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(1)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Multiple studies have shown that children who have access to books and other printed-materials become better readers than children who do not have books available in their homes. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferstfoundation.org\/resources\/fifty-top-literacy-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(3)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over 60% of low-income families have no books in their homes and 80% of preschool and after-school programs for low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for the children they serve.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferstfoundation.org\/resources\/fifty-top-literacy-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(3)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More than 80% of children from disadvantaged communities lose reading skills over the summer because they lack access to books and other reading materials and those children rarely catch back up. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rif.org\/pdf\/Literacy-Facts-Stats.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(2)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sixty-five perfect of fourth graders nationally read at or below\u00a0a basic level and 34% of children entering kindergarten lack the basic language skills needed to learn to read.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rif.org\/pdf\/Literacy-Facts-Stats.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(2)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Children who can not read are less likely to graduate high school and more likely to end up on welfare or in jail.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferstfoundation.org\/resources\/fifty-top-literacy-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(3)<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What can parents do to promote early literacy?<\/h3>\n<h4>Talk to children early and often.<\/h4>\n<p>Children who are spoken to consistently by their family from birth have larger vocabularies at age 3 and are more successful academically. <a href=\"http:\/\/teacher.scholastic.com\/products\/face\/pdf\/research-compendium\/early-literacy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(4)<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Read aloud regularly<\/h4>\n<p>Children aged between three and five who are read to regularly enter kindergarten more academically prepared in many different areas. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/united\/products_services\/booksforbabies\/earlyliteracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(5)<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Have books available<\/h4>\n<p>The more print sources children are exposed to and have available, the better their reading success.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferstfoundation.org\/resources\/fifty-top-literacy-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(3)<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Use community resources<\/h4>\n<p>Visit the library often and borrow resources or see if your local branch sells donated\u00a0books at a low-cost (usually $1 or less per book).
