Honeybun&#8217;s always been good at trying to prove her point and insists on having the last word (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/05\/is-this-a-joke\/\">&#8220;Is This a Joke?&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.7;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/27\/preschool-sassing\/\">&#8220;Preschool Sassing&#8221;<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">) and now Sugarplum\u00a0has come into the same phase.\u00a0 Part of Sugarplum&#8217;s\u00a0arguing is her age as she comes into what I classify as \u201cthe dictator\u201d stage (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondmommying.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/24\/the-roy-theory\/\">&#8220;The Roy Theory&#8221;<\/a>) and part of it is mimicking her sister and picking up on Honeybun&#8217;s language and behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I love that my girls show streaks of independence and want to stand up for themselves as these are skills they will need as the<span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">y grow and spend more time away from home.\u00a0 I want them to be able to assert themselves and believe in and stand up for what they know is right but at home, I expect them to be respectful of what hubby and I tell them and to not argue about things that are regular routines and expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over the years I\u2019ve had highs and lows with being able to deal with the arguing.\u00a0 When things are going well I am able to quickly and easily shut down their arguing behavior using concise statements which do not allow for arguing, negotiating or getting their way. \u00a0I find I have to rotate using them because just like anything else, if one way is used too often is become ineffectual.\u00a0 Here are the ones I find the most useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">I\u2019m not asking you, I\u2019m telling you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">What did mommy say? &lt;commence arguing&gt; What did mommy say? &lt;more arguing&gt; What did mommy say? &lt;etc. etc. etc.&gt;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">No arguing, you say \u201cyes ma\u2019am\u201d and do what I asked<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">This is not a debate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019ve also been having a hard time with Sugarplum\u00a0demanding things (another characteristic of \u201cthe dictator\u201d phase).\u00a0 She starts nearly every statement with \u201cBut I want\u2026\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to encourage her to ask for things rather than demand them and to, of course, ask nicely.\u00a0 When she starts bossing and\/or demanding I\u2019ll respond to her with one of these statements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">Can you please ASK me nicely?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">It\u2019s not your job to tell me what to do.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.7;\">You\u2019re using your \u201cwant\u201d words again.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My girls are champion arguers.
