to Home

My house is a disaster. It might look good when you walk in the front door, but peek in the closed bedroom doors and it’s a whole other story! “Decorating” is not my strong point. The furniture is placed and trinkets put away. What is missing is curtains, paintings (which we have but are currently awkwardly hung on preexisting screws) and all the other things that make a home look put together. I have good intentions of getting things “decorated” and have lots of projects started (which in my world means lots of raw supplies sitting in bags that I dream about actually putting together one day) but finding the time, energy and patience has been nearly impossible.

I keep blaming it in on the fact that we’re still “just settling in”. Trying to make it seem like we haven’t been in our new home very long, but realistically we’ve been here over 6 months and have had plenty of time to get things done. We’ve still got boxes of stuff that needs to find a home and while I have tons of stuff to hang on the walls in my girls’ room, for some reason I’m terrified of actually putting it up. I guess I’m afraid I won’t like what I do or I’ll get something to add and will have to move everything leaving holes in the walls and no matching paint to touch it up with (and I have no plans to repaint myself and can’t justify the cost of hiring someone!)

I guess I need to come up with a new excuse for my piles of unfinished projects. The real problem I have when I’m home alone is as soon as I sit down to do something my children lose their minds and I have to stop in the middle or what I’m doing and go intervene. This makes even starting a project overwhelming.

When we were in Dublin we had 5 floors of house (yep, something like 42 stairs from the kitchen to the top bedroom) and I kept my sewing machine in the very top bedroom so I could easily sneak off for an hour or two when hubby was home and get things done. When we first moved into our current house (all on one floor) I was sewing on the dining room table which invited little fingers to explore my pins, scissors, thread and other miscellaneous mess making and dangerous items. I now have my sewing machine in what will be the baby nursery with the hope that I might be able to get some quiet alone time to do some of my projects for the house.

Two problems with my current set up: 1) I can’t see the floor of the nursery so laying out fabric is impossible. 2) I have some kind of mommy magnet or homing device where no matter where I go in the house, my children find me! Even if hubby is home and doing his best to entertain them they can’t seem to manage to be away from me (even though they spend all day when he’s at work screaming “I want my Daddy!”). I’m also on a deadline as I know having three kids will change the game and unfortunately Honeybun’s Pre-K program will end shortly after the arrival of the baby, just as all the new baby help heads home, and I will be strapped all day, every day with three children.

Guess I better put up the writing for now and get started on a project. Kitchen curtains maybe? Sugarplum keeps pulling down the makeshift ones I put up to hide her potty training nakedness. I just hope I’m able to at least dig out the needed baby gear from underneath the chaos before little one arrives!

<p style="text-align:
