Imagining Baby

Still no baby.  While my body is clearly preparing, who knows how much longer it will be (Hours?  Days?  Weeks?!?).  While I’m more than ready, the girls are super excited too.  Yesterday morning I got Honeybun from her room much to her disappointment “Mommy, I thought the baby was going to come in the night time.” And this morning Sugarplum approached me and asked “Mommy, is the baby still in your tummy?”  When I asked what she thought she replied “That’s a big baby in your tummy!” and then proceeded to dance the baby and give the baby “big hugs!” for 15 minutes.

We have spent the past 31 weeks talking to the girls all about lots of different baby related things.  What the baby looks like at each week in my tummy, what it’s doing, how big it is in my tummy, what’s going to happen when I go into labor, how the baby is actually going to get out of my tummy and what most babies are like when they are new.  We’ve read books, watched videos and talked, a lot.  But it’s always been me talking and explaining or quizzing them on what I’ve already told them.

Both girls WANT a sister but have recently been talking about how they THINK it’s a boy.  I’m hoping their recent revelation will prevent any disappointment with the outcome either way.  They seem to have processed the idea of both and are comfortable with both.

baby A few nights ago I decided to give them the chance to share what they think.  During our nightly journal time (see “Our Family Journal”) I asked the girls to each draw a picture of what they thought the baby would look like (this is actually Sugarplum’s first person drawing–The pink one on top).

Last night I asked them to tell me what they thought the baby would be like.

Sugarplum responded: “A boy.  The baby gonna say ‘bah, bah, bah!’  The baby’s gonna look like a sheep lovey.” (she was in a silly mood!)

Honeybun responded: “I think it’s gonna cry.  It’s gonna have milk a lot.”

To which Sugarplum had to add to hers: “The baby gonna cry.”

They still have some misconceptions and confusion, which is expected.  Sugarplum got out our push/riding toy the other day and my mom explained that toy is for the baby and it helped Honeybun learn to walk so now Sugarplum thinks the baby is going to be walking around with the push toy right away.  Honeybun also took all of what she decided were “too small toys” and put them in a special box so the baby can’t get them and choke.  She got very upset when we tried to explain to her the baby won’t be moving around for a while so it’s ok to have the small toys out for playing still.
