Baby Naming: Keeping it in the Family

Naming a baby for me has got to be one of the most important yet stressful things a parents does.  The name you choose to put on a child will be with them forever and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.  We aren’t overly critical of names to the extent of analyzing every possible teasing scenario, but we do rule out obvious teasing triggers.  Honeybun’s name came to us fairly easily but Sugarplum  took a bit more discussion.  The next baby (due in 12 weeks or less!!!) had been even harder.  We still have not settled yet on either a boy or girl name (since we don’t know the sex we like to be prepared with one of each).

We have chosen to use family names as middle names for our children (though we did change the spellings) and even this part for baby #3 has been hard.  I’ve spent many nap times perusing our family trees (which my sister and grandmother have spent many hours on) and thought I would share a few of the gems I found:

We have a very “old-lady” stigma in our most recent female names which include:

Bernadean

Mildred

Gertrude

Martha

Olive

Judith

Agnes

We also have quite a few very ethnic names (hubby is very Scandinavian and French and I have a good bit of Lithuanian and German in both male and female) such as:

Ona

Juozas

Hilja

Loiva

Helge

Odilon

Hawey

Guillaume

Coutere

Jacques

Some very historical, but not relevant to modern times on the male side such as:

Archibald

Ebinezer

Ichabod

Cuthbert

Leopold

Some downright strange ones:

Thedosia

Almira

Experience

Thankful

Ephraim

Eulalia

Hopestill

But these ones just make me laugh and are absolutely not in consideration for our next child:

Dorcas

Marmaduke
